2 TYPES OF SCIENCE
I. Pure Science ---a science depending on deductions from demonstrated truths, such as mathematics or
logic, or studied without regard to practical applications.
II.AppliedScience- the discipline dealing with the art or science of applying scientific knowledge to
practical problems.
Technology --- refers to methods, systems, and devices which are the result of scientific knowledge
being used for practical purposes.
2. Energy and Power Technology --- an interdisciplinary engineering science having to do with the
efficient, safe, environmentally friendly and economical extraction, conversion, transportation, storage
and use of energy, targeted towards yielding high efficiency whilst skirting side effects on humans, nature
and the environment.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- Generating energy is very expensive and it typically uses non-renewable
resources. Technological products and systems need energy to function. Burning fossil fuel causes
greenhouse gases to form.
3. Information Technology --- the study or use of systems (especially computers and telecommunications)
for storing, retrieving, and sending information.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- it is harder to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources online.
Machines must be maintained and upgraded.
1
4. Life Technology or Biotechnology --- the exploitation of biological processes for industrial and other
purposes, especially the genetic manipulation of microorganisms for the production of antibiotics,
hormones, etc.
5. Communication Technology --- known as information technology, refers to all equipment and
programs that are used to process and communicate information. Professionals in
the communication technology field specialize in the development, installation, and service of these
hardware and software systems.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- Computers, printers, and digital cameras make forgery and plagiarism easier.
People tend to create and print more documents, which uses more paper.
6. Agricultural Technology --- application of techniques to control the growth and harvesting of animal
and vegetable products.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- fertilizers have found their way ito ground water, polluting good drinking
water. Genetically altered crops have potential for weeds and insects to mutate and become resistant
7. Medical Technology --- is when we use that knowledge to protect living organisms (usually humans)
from disease or death. Medical technologies can be used for diagnosis, the process of figuring out what's
wrong with someone, or for treatment, the process of making someone better.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- too many x-rays can cause cancer. The cost for equipment and research is
going up and some patients can not afford treatment because of it.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- recycling is more complicated and time consuming than garbage disposal.
9. Production Technology --- would be to include any machinery that makes creating a tangible physical
product possible for a business. To the small business, this means a workshop at the very least, with more
elaborate operations making use of machines and assembly lines.
A. Manufacturing Technology --- provides the tools that enable production of all manufactured goods. ...
Machine tools are non-portable, power-driven manufacturing machinery and systems used to perform
specific operations on man-made materials to produce durable goods or components.
2
B. Construction Technology --- refers to the collection of innovative tools, machinery, modifications,
software, etc. used during the construction phase of a project that enables advancement in
field construction methods, including semi-automated and automated construction equipment.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- noise and debris, traffic problems, accidents and injuries.
10. Transportation Technology --- refers to tools and machines used to solve problems or improve
conditions in respect to the movement of people and goods.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- Traffic accidents. Pollution from vehicles and the use of natural resources
11. Nanotechnology --- manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale.
Impacts of Nanotechnology
POSITIVE IMPACTS ---implanted sensors continuously sense and adjust medical technology. Molecular
manufacturing creates faster diagnosis of diseases
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- Implanted sensors impeded privacy. Weapons and surveillance devices can be
made small, cheap, and powerful by using molecular manufacturing
12. Management Technology --- can also be defined as the integrated planning, design, optimization,
operation and control of technological products, processes and services, a better definition would be
the management of the use of technology for human advantage.
13. Equipment technology --- means technology assets including mainframe computers, servers, general
computer equipment, printers, monitors, hard drives, memory, storage devices and call centers/ACD
systems but excluding Flight Simulators.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS --- With the creation of new materials, we don't know how the materials will
behave over a long period of time.
3 DISCOVERIES IN SCIENCE
1. Discovery by serendipity --- the occurrence of an unplanned fortunate discovery
Give examples: when someone accidently finds something good.
3
2. Discovery by Intuition --- the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial
way.
Give examples: Dennis found some money in the pocket of his suit jacket that he hadn't worn in two
years.
Give examples: a skillful way in which his terrier Tony opened the garden gate, easily misunderstood as
an insightful act by someone seeing the final behavior.
