Village KIIT School of Rural Management, Bhubaneswar

Sasol was the village located 22 km away from our college to reach our destination It
took about an hour to reach the village, we faced some traffic in between as I was
located near from the city Bhubaneswar which is the capital of state Odisha. This
village is situated in between the border of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Village is 2.5
km away from the National Highway-16.

It was done so as to make aware and know about villages, villagers and all activities
related to them, It was an opportunity to get an exposure on the rural areas, aimed at
performing PRA assessment. The objective were to prepare a social map and
resource map and lime line study with seasonality. When we reached the panchayat
office we noticed people collecting their pensions. Then we with our faculty members
represented KIIT School Of Rural Management they also interacted with us and
welcomed us with some refreshment soft drinks.
75 students are there and they were divided into three groups each having 25
students. Each group was given a different village to study. We were given salol
village.We started collecting household data from the west side of the village, we
saw some temples, ponds, telephone towers and most of the houses are pacca and
few are katcha, thar we saw in our transact walk.

The observations of the trip:


1. majority of the population ware wage labourer’s
2. people were not interested in keeping livestock
3. lack of assets like agriculture land
4. the village was moderately affected by the cyclone in 2018
5. the toilets were constructed but not used
6. the quality of drinking water was low iron content was high
7. water logging was in issue due to low land
8. low soil fertility of soli for pulses
9. monkeys were the threats for vegetation
10. agricultural was done by machines
11. women empowerment was seen as the samiti sabha was an female

key learning’s :
1. villagers did better jobs in service sector
2. the city being near was an advantage
3. it was an moderately affected cyclone zone
4. there was an contrast in wealth and assets, some were extreme poor and
some were compared very rich.
5. The overall standard of living was better.
6. They followed the trends and not interested to keep livestock

We are thankful for this opportunity by our college and faculty members and on spot
teaching by our KSRM faculty helped us in all of these data collection.
