SECTION 02 83 00 WALL CLADDING

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. GENERAL : Provide landscape wall cladding in accordance with requirements of the


Contract documents.

1.2 REFERENCES

A. Related British Standards and Other references


1. Latest editions of all relevant British Standards shall be used including those inter
alia listed with current amendments and additions.
2. Any differences between their requirements and this specification shall be
submitted to the Consultant for his ruling.

BS 5080-2: 1986 Structural fixings in concrete and masonry. Method for


determination of resistance to loading in shear.
BS EN 1467: 2003 Natural stone. Rough blocks. Requirements.
BS EN 1468: 2003 Natural stone test methods. Rough slabs. Requirements.

BS EN 13373 Natural stone test methods. Determination of geometric

1.3 DEFINITIONS

A. For the purpose of this Specification the definitions given by the British Standards,
as appropriate, shall apply.

B. Related work
1. Carefully examine all of the Contract Documents for requirements, which affect the
work of this section.
2. Where materials used in this section (e.g. concrete and reinforcement) have been
specified elsewhere in this specification document, the relevant clauses shall apply
to this section.

C. Silence of Specification
1. The apparent silence of the Specification, Drawings or other Contract Documents
as to any or the omission from them of a detailed description concerning any point,
shall be regarded as meaning that only the best general practice is to be used.
2. Materials that have not been individually specified, shall as a minimum standard, be
in accordance with the relevant British standard where applicable.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop Drawings
1. The Contractor shall produce large scale shop drawings reflecting fabrication
and installation of all wall cladding work to include plans and details showing exact
size, shape, profile, curvature, jointing, finish and the installation method and
submit to the Consultant for comments.

B. Product Data
1. Submit manufacturer's product data, installation instructions, use limitations
and recommendations. Provide certifications stating that materials comply with
requirements.

C. Samples
1. Submit representative samples of each element that is to be used in the finished work,
showing the full range of colour and finish variations expected. Provide at least four (4)
un-mounted units to locations agreed with the Consultant for comment.
2. Provide wrapped, packaged and labeled extra material consisting of three (3) pieces of
each type, size and configuration of kerb and paving materials used on the project.
Deliver to the location designated by the Consultant.
3. The samples provided must also meet the technical aspects of the specification.
4. Any materials which do not comply with the specification, are not approved or are not to
the satisfaction of the Consultant may be rejected and the Contractor shall replace them
at his own cost, with acceptable items.

D. Closeout Submittals
1. The Contractor shall maintain one set of Contract Drawings for the sole purpose of
recording “As-Built” conditions of the wall cladding works as a whole. All changes,
previously approved, and all completed work shall be recorded on these drawings.
2. The As-Built drawings shall be supplied to the Consultant for approval prior to the issue of
the Completion Certificate.
3. On approval of the as-built drawings the Contractor shall forward the following for the
Consultants retention:

(i)Three complete sets of As-Built drawings properly folded and provided in the plastic
folders as part of the Operations and Maintenance Manuals.

(ii) one re-writable CD of the drawings properly labelled and titled.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Contractor’s Quality Assurance responsibilities


1. Contractor is solely responsible for control of the work.

B. Contractors testing laboratory


1. The contractor shall employ, at his own expense, a qualified independent testing
laboratory to conduct tests and submit reports for kerb and paving materials.

C. Qualified Installer
1. The Installer shall be trained and licensed by the supplier or manufacturer in the use the
materials and equipment to be used in the work

D. Mock-ups
1. Before beginning primary work of this section, provide mock-ups of representative
installations at locations acceptable to Consultant and obtain Consultant's approval.
2. Protect and maintain acceptable mock-ups throughout the work of this section to serve as
criteria for acceptance of this work.
3. Mock ups are to be constructed as standalone project samples and should not be
included as part of the finished work. For walls, fences and balustrades a minimum
section of 2.0m shall be constructed or if the wall, fence or balustrade is in bays a

minimum of one bay including both posts or piers.


4. Mock-ups shall incorporate other Consultants details of specified items as required.

E. Source
1. All materials shall be the product of one supplier as specified and shall comply with the
relevant British Standards.
2. Contractor to submit for Consultants review and comments, information on the supplier of
all materials furnishing used on the project.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING


Deliver, store and handle all materials in strict compliance with manufacturer's instructions and
recommendations. Store above ground and protect from damage and soiling.

1.7 PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS

A. Weather
1. Perform work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions are within the limits
established by International Masonry All-Weather Council Guide Specification and
the mortar admixture manufacturer.

B. Levels, ref. points and setting out


1. The works are to be set out from primary datum levels and setting out points indicated on
the drawings or from information provided by the Consultant.
2. The Contractor shall submit his proposals, for setting out and controlling the alignment of
the Works, to the Consultant and obtain his approval prior to the start of construction. The
Contractor shall supply to the Consultant details of the value and location of all temporary
benchmarks and reference points he establishes.
3. Should the Contractor dispute the original ground levels shown on the Drawings he shall
agree these with the Consultant before disturbing the original ground.

C. Substrates
1. Proceed with work only when substrate construction work is complete.

D. Site Investigation/Dimensions
1. The Contractor shall be responsible for ensuring all horizontal site dimensions and levels
are taken and recorded on shop drawings before starting fabrication of any ‘special’ stone
material.

1.8 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Submit for employer’s documentation.


1. Furnish 5 year written warranty in form stipulated by consultant, signed by the Contractor
and Installer, agreeing to repair or replace work which has failed as a result of defects in
materials or workmanship.
2. Upon notification of such defects within the warranty period, make necessary repairs or
replacement at no cost and at the convenience of the employer.

1.9 MAINTENANCE

A. Operations and Maintenance Manuals: Submit for employers documentation.


1. Furnish complete manuals describing the materials, devices, and procedures to be
followed in operating and maintaining the work.
2. Include current manufacturers brochures and spare parts (materials) lists describing the

actual materials used in the work, including stone, paving materials, sealants and other
major components.
3. Assemble manuals for component parts into single binders and CD’s for each system.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS/SUPPLIERS

A. Stone cladding

2.2 MATERIALS

A. General
1. Where materials used in this section have been specified elsewhere in this
document, the relevant clauses shall apply to this section. Materials that have not
been individually specified shall be of first class quality and the minimum standard
acceptable shall be the relevant British Standard where applicable.

B. Stone Tests
1. Historic test data shall be provided upon request. The contractor may hire and
pay an independent testing laboratory to perform tests that will be typical of the
stone specified for the project.
2. All stone supplied shall meet or exceeds the standard ASTM specifications.

C. Finish
1. Finish shall be within the range of samples approved by the Consultant. The
surfaces shall be out of wind, straight and true in all directions.

D. Facing Thickness
1. Stone shall be to the thicknesses as shown on contract drawings.

E. Anchor Provision
1. All stone panels shall be adequately anchored in combination with mortar and
adhesives.

F. Packing and Loading


1. Finished stone shall be carefully palletized, loaded and delivered to the site, in a
manner to prevent damage and to prevent possible delays due to replacement of
pieces. No material known to stain or discolor will be used for blocking or packing.
Stone shall be delivered promptly and in proper sequence for setting.

G. Site Storage
The stone shall be stacked on timber or platforms at a minimum of 3” above
ground upon receipt at the building site or storage yard. Care should be taken to
prevent staining during storage. If the stone will be stored for a lengthy period,
then polyethylene or other suitable plastic should be placed between anything

facing the stones finished surfaces as well as used as an overall protective


covering.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verification of conditions
1. Examine areas to receive the work and the conditions under which the work would
be performed.
2. Identify conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work.
3. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

B. Base surfaces
1. Examine surfaces to receive paving materials specified under this section, and
conditions under which they will be installed, with installer present, for compliance
with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting
performance of the work.
2. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3. The installer shall be fully responsible for accepting the condition of such surfaces
prior to initiation of work.
4. Ensure that surfaces to receive paving materials are firm, dry, clean, and free of oily
or greasy films, mortar, soil, and other foreign substances.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Fabrication
1. Accurately cut all material to shape and dimension in strict accordance with
approved shop drawings.
2. Jointed surfaces shall be cut full and square from the face.
3. All exposed surfaces to be true and out of wind, with edges in a continuous straight
line with adjoining edges.
4. Fabrication tolerances shall be in accordance with reference standards clause 1.2 .

B. General Preparation
1. Clean sub-base to remove dirt, dust, debris and loose particles.
2. Do not use damaged, chipped or defective stone pieces. Cut stone with power saw
to provide clean-cut edges; form patterns indicated.
3. Use full, uncut units to the greatest extent possible.
4. Beginning work means installer accepts substrates and conditions.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. General
1. Strictly comply with suppliers and manufacturer's instructions and
recommendations, except where more restrictive requirements are specified in this
section.

B. Mortar bedding
1. Install stones in full mortar backing conforming to the requirements below.

(i) Mix and prepare mortar in compliance with mortar/ grout manufacturer's instructions
and recommendations.

(ii) Saturate concrete sub-base with clean water several hours before placing setting
bed.

(iii) Spread and screed setting bed to a uniform thickness required for accurate setting of
stone to achieve a uniform surface. Mix and place only that amount that can be

covered with stone prior to initial set. Cut back, level edge, and remove and discard
mortar that has reached initial set prior to placing stone.

(iv) Wet stones thoroughly before setting. Set stone in pattern approved by the
Consultant. Provide 5mm (coping) and 3mm for feature wall slips dry joints between
stones. Set stones before initial set of mortar bed occurs. Do not set stone on dry
bed. Apply uniform 1.6mm thick slurry bond coat to bed or back of stone with a flat
trowel just prior to placing stones on green or wet setting bed.

(v) Set stones into place with heavy rubber mallet to obtain full contact and adhesion
with setting bed. Do not disturb stones after setting. Remove and relay stones that
must be adjusted. Wall to have appearance of dry stone wall. No mortar to be visible
on front face of wall.

(vi) Expansion and Control Joints: Provide 9.5mm wide sealant filled joints in compliance
with relevant Specification section. Provide sealant filled expansion joints over all
cracks and joints in concrete sub slabs and over all changes in backing materials.

(vii) Prevent disturbance of stone wall during setting or within 24 hours after initial setting
of stones.

C. Anchors and Anchoring


1. Stainless steel anchors or their equal shall be used throughout the work where
required

D. Incidental Cutting and Drilling


1. Pieces in excess of 100 pounds (45kg) may require Lewis holes, lifting clap
dimples, or other provisions as necessitated to facilitate the lifting device(s) used
by the installer.
2. Lifting holes in the top beds of panels or other locations where moisture collection
is likely to develop will be filled with non-expanding grout or high-modulus
elastomeric sealant after installation and final placement.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Site Damage Repair / Replacement


1. Any damage to wall cladding material caused during handling and installation,
or by subsequent site operations, is to be rectified immediately. Obtain approval
before commencing extensive repairs or replacements.
2. Replace material with damage considered unacceptable for repair.

B. Maintenance
1. After removal of protective coverings, clean and maintain all stainless steel surfaces
at regular intervals until Practical Completion.
2. All maintenance is to be in accordance with procedures detailed by the wall
cladding supplier’s technical literature and the guarantee.
3. At practical completion, maintenance details must be passed on to the
Consultant to enable the Employer to set up a maintenance contract.
4. Maintenance records should be kept until the end of the guarantee period.

3.5 CLEANING

A. Repairing and cleaning


1. Remove and replace loose, chipped, broken or damaged pieces of stone or
cladding material.
2. Clean exposed surfaces using materials and methods recommended by the wall

cladding supplier. (The Contractor is required to provide a method statement


for cleaning of material, to be submitted for approval prior to commencement of
wall cladding works.)
3. Remove and replace work that cannot be successfully cleaned.
4. Upon completion of the work, remove unused materials, debris, containers and
equipment from the project site.

3.6 PROTECTION

A. Protection of wall cladding


1. The Contractor shall include in his rates for wall cladding, adequately protecting
all surfaces to the satisfaction of the Consultant until Substantial Completion of the
whole of the Works.

B. Sealant
1. Wall surfaces shall be treated with two coats of premium, no-sheen, natural look,
water based penetrating sealer/impregnator, applied in accordance with the
manufacturers printed instructions
