The Real Us:
What a Great Idea:

The strength of cement decreases as the age passes. In other words, the strength of cement is
very low in comparison to that on the production day.  The following table shows how the
strength of cement decreases with the passage of time.

Period of storage of cement (month) Approx. relative strength at (28 days percent)
0 100
3 80
6 70
12 60
24 50

In view of the above, it is always advised to use only fresh cement i.e. the cement produced
within 1 or 2 months. Also never buy cement in large quantities. Instead, buy cement at regular
interval of time depending upon the quantity which can be exhausted within 1 or 2 week.

But in the case of concrete, the strength increases with the passage of time. The following table
shows the strength of concrete with respect to its age.

Age of concrete Approx. Strength (percent)

1 day 16
3 days 40
7 days 67
28 days 100
3 months 122
6 months 146
12 months 155

Grades of concrete are defined by the strength and composition of the concrete, and the
minimum strength the concrete should have following 28 days of initial construction. E.g. M20
is a grade of concrete where M denotes Mix of concrete and 20 denote the strength of concrete in
28th day (i.e. 20 N/mm2 strength on 28th day).

Drone Survey:

Drone surveys are a faster, safer and more cost-efficient way to survey at height. Sometimes
referred to as aerial surveys, UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) surveys, or UAV (Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle) surveys, drone surveys are an increasingly popular method of surveying form the
air.
For roof inspections, bridge or large building surveys, drones are fast becoming the sensible
choice for engineers, construction and asset managers because they offer great advantages in
safety and speed of access.
Drone survey are used for Land Surveying, Land Management and development, slope

Poor compaction;
Theoretically, compaction of concrete is the process adopted for expelling the entrapped air as
far as possible from the fresh concrete to achieve the highest possible density of the compacted
mass. It simply means that there shouldn’t be any void present in concrete. If the compaction of
concrete is not done then it may lead to the following results.

 Poor strength of concrete, which may lower the service life of the house or building.
 High porosity in concrete, which may leads to leakage in the house or building.
 Honeycombing in concrete, which may also leads to leakage in the house or building.
 Lower the durability of concrete, which may increase the chances of repair and
maintenance of house or building.

That’s why you should watch the construction worker if he is using vibrator properly or not
while construction your house.

In its raw state, concrete powder is environmentally friendly, as it is of the environment itself – a
natural component. But it is in the industrial extraction of the materials, the mixing, and of
course the application of concrete that is ceases to be environmentally friendly.

There is a new concrete which is called green concrete which is a form of eco-friendly concrete
that is manufactured using waste or residual materials from different industries, and requires less
amount of energy for production. Compared to traditional concrete, it produces less carbon
dioxide, and is considered cheap and more durable.

Ready mix concrete

Ready mix concrete is concrete prepared in batch plant to meet design specifications set forth by
the designer and supplied to the site where it is either cast using some form of traditional casting
or (usually) usually concrete pumps. The mix should be tested in the batch plant and forwarded
to the designer for approval. Then during construction, the mix is testing on site for slump and
samples are taken to the lab for compressive strength testing. There are also tests that may be
performed for additives as per the recommendation of the designer. So Ready Mix Go!

1:2:4 does not necessarily gives you M15 strength. The strength of concrete does not always
depends on the ratio of cement sand and aggregate but has various of factors such as quality of
raw materials, water/cement ratio, age of concrete, compaction of concrete, temperature, relative
humidity and curing of concrete. So you should watch out on all these factors.

3D Printing

An engineer invented 3D printing, which soon wooed architects and designers. It was a means to
create models they could discard and reprint while perfecting a design. But 3D printing has a
new home in construction, where it is carrying out full-sized projects.
In 2017, 3D printing helped in the construction of two bridges. This was a major milestone in the
evolution of the tool. Now, construction companies are trialing full-sized homes, a giant step
forward.
The opportunities are endless. This applies to impoverished regions of the globe, where
traditional housing is costly. Construction firms with mobile, cloud-based systems could
transform the scope of the industry.

Cool roofs
Cool roofs are specially designed to offer increased solar reflectance and decreased thermal
emittance. In other words, they reflect more of the sun's rays than your average shingle roof, and
prevent the warm or cool air inside from escaping through the top of a building. Under the
intense heat of the summer sun, dark shingle roofs can reach temperatures of 150 degrees
Fahrenheit (65.5 degrees Celsius). The reflectance of a cool roof can cut that down by more than
50 degrees [source: EnergySavers].

Lowering the temperature of the roof itself is an advantage, of course, but the real savings are
inside. A cool roof improves the interior temperature of a building, either by reflecting intense
heat or trapping the air inside. That reduces the strain placed on air conditioning systems, thereby
reducing the emissions that result from powering our heating and cooling. Cool roofs can be
constructed with a number of materials, including special reflective paint and cool roof shingles
and tiles. If you need an environmental reason to believe in the cool roof, look no further: Their
reflectance can help lower the heat island effect of urban and suburban areas, which causes
dramatically higher temperatures under harsh sunlight compared to surrounding rural areas
[source: EPA].

Curing:

Curing is the process of controlling the rate and extent of moisture loss from concrete to ensure
an uninterrupted hydration of Portland cement after concrete has been placed and finished in its
final position. Curing also ensures to maintain an adequate temperature of concrete in its early
ages, as this directly affects the rate of hydration of cement and eventually the strength gain of
concrete or mortars.

Exposed surfaces of concrete shall be kept continuously damp or in a wet condition by ponding
or by covering with sacks, canvas, hessian or other similar material and kept continuously wet
for atleast 7 days from the date of placing, in case of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and
atleast 10 days when mineral admixtures or blended cements are used. In case of concrete where
mineral admixtures or blended cements are used, it is recommended that the above minimum
periods may be extended to 14 days, for assisting the secondary reaction.

So keep curing and caring you building.

There are 50 bikes with a tank that has the capacity to go 100 km. using these 50 bikes, what is
the maximum distance that you can go?

Answer: 350 km

Workings: You might initially think of just making a simple multiplication of the number of
bikes and capacities. But remember each has 100 km capacity and they are all in the same place.
You could set all 50 bikes off but they'd all only travel 100 km.

Now, one solution would be to move all bikes 50 km. Then empty half the bikes' fuel tanks into
the other to fill them up. Keep doing this until you have 1 bike with a full tank to finish the trek.

Of course, you'll have the odd bike stranded when dividing odd numbers. This way you'll get the
last bike of the 50 to have traveled 350 km in total. Nice.

Brick

A brick is building material used to make walls, pavements and other elements
in masonry construction. Traditionally, the term brick referred to a unit composed of clay, but it
is now used to denote rectangular units made of clay-bearing soil, sand, and lime,
or concrete materials. Fired bricks are one of the longest-lasting and strongest building materials,
sometimes referred to as artificial stone, and have been used since circa 4000 BC. Air-dried
bricks, also known as mudbricks, have a history older than fired bricks, and have an additional
ingredient of a mechanical binder such as straw.
Normally, bricks contain the following ingredients:

1. Silica (sand) – 50% to 60% by weight

2. Alumina (clay) – 20% to 30% by weight
3. Lime – 2 to 5% by weight
4. Iron oxide – ≤ 7% by weight
5. Magnesia – less than 1% by weight

Standard size of brick in Nepal is 240 x 115 x 57 mm. So in 1 Cubic Feet of wall will contain
13.5 no. of bricks approximately.

The average age of a construction worker today is 42 years old.

Entertain Your Audience:

In concrete, the single most significant influence on most or all of the properties is the amount of
water used in the mix.

In concrete mix design, the ratio of the amount of water to the amount of cement used (both by
weight) is called the water to cement ratio (w/c). These two ingredients are responsible for
binding everything together.

The water to cement ratio largely determines the strength and durability of the concrete when it
is cured properly. The w/c ratio refers to the ratio of the weights of water and cement used in the
concrete mix. A w/c ratio of 0.4 means that for every 100 kg of cement used in the concrete, 40
kg of water is added.

For ordinary concrete, water content ratio is 0.6 to 0.7.

So watch the person who is putting water in the mixer.
