INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING

CHAPTER 1: Explore the Network

1.1Globally Connected
 Networking Today
Network has no boundary and supports the way we - Learn, Communicate, Work, Play.
 Providing Resources in a Network
Networks of Many Sizes:
a) Small Home / Office Networks.
b) Medium to Large Networks.
c) World Wide Network.
Clients and Servers:
a) Clients request and display information.
b) Servers provide information to other devices on the network.
Peer-to-Peer: Computers can be both server and client at the same time.

1.2 LANs, WANs, and the Internet

 Network Components
End Device: Either the source or destination of a message.
Intermediary Network Devices:
a) Connect multiple individual networks to form an internetwork.
b) Connect the individual end devices to the network.
c) Ensure data flows across the network.
d) Provide connectivity.
Network Media: Provide the pathway for data transmission, interconnect devices.
Network Representations: Router, Switch, PC, Server.
Topology Diagrams: Physical, Logical.

 LANs and WANs

Local Area Networks:
a) Spans across small geographical area.
b) Interconnects end devices which is administrated by a single organization.
c) Provide high speed bandwidth to internal devices.
Wide Area Networks:
a) Interconnects LAN.
b) Administrated by multiple service providers.
c) Provide slower speed links between LANS.
Metropolitan Area Networks: Interconnection of networks in a city.

 The Internet, Intranets, and Extranets

The Internet:
a) Worldwide collection of interconnected networks.
b) Not owned by any individual or group.
Intranets: Company Only Extranets: Customers, Suppliers, Collaborators.
