TECHNIQUE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF ASPHALT CONCRETE SURFACE COURSE.
SPECIFICATION
MATERIAL
1. Coarse Aggregates:-
Coarse aggregate shall consist of hard
durable fragment of rock whose properties
shall be within the following limits:-
- Specific gravity = 2.5 - 3.0
- Silt and Clay content (%) ...N.G.T. 1.0
- Los Angeles Abrasion (%)..N.G.T. 25.0
- Crushing Value (%) ......N.G.T. 25.0
- Absorption (%) ......N.G.T. 2.0
- Flakiness Index (%) ......N.G.T. 30.0
2. Fine Aggregates:-
(a) Natural sand or crushed rock fines
(< 2.36mm) shall be used.
(b) Properties of fine aggregate shall be
within the following limits.
- Specific gravity = 2.6 - 2.8
- Silt and Clay content (%) ..N.G.T. 1.0
- Absorption (%) ...... N.G.T. 6.0
- Organic impurities (ppm) ...N.G.T. 500
- Passing 200 sieve (%) ...N.G.T. 4.0
- Fineness modulus = 2.0 - 3.6
(c) Filler ( < 0.075 mm)
- Cement, hydrated lime, lime stone
dust or other rock dust free from silt
and clay may be used.
- filler used shall be thoroughly dry.
3. Binder
- 80/100 penetration grade bitumen
shall be used.

1. Asphalt concrete mixture shall be designed - Prime or tack the surface of the base course 1.-Measurement of Density,
by the Marshall Method to have the following as specified. Marshall Stability and
properties:- - Preparation of aggregates, preparation of Flow
- No of blows on each end of the Asphaltic Concrete mixture, temperature -Frequency of
specimen = 75 control, transportation, placing, shovelling, measurement= 1/1000 ft2
- Stability (lb) ................... G.T.E. 1350 raking and tamping after spreading and
