The Jurists

Piloting the era of law

‘The Jurists’ is an international non-profit organization which aims to help law
professionals, students, researchers, and faculty of major law schools and colleges
in the country build a research network working on issues of contemporary
relevance. The objective is to support research in various fields associated with law
by way of expert inputs and resources.

The idea behind ‘The Jurists’ is at bridging the gap between the academia and
practice by researching on issues of contemporary social and practical importance.
It has often been observed that the work of the academia is divorced from practical
rigors of implementation. Reasons for such are multifold, ranging from a lack of
platform from where such research might actuate a change in policy to plain lack of
resources and expert input. The organization would endeavor to pitch a strong and
informed voice, a voice structured by the best minds in the area, in a forum where
it will affect policy and decision making, thus marking a paradigm shift in the
manner in which academics and legal research is understood.

To ensure that such research is not bereft of sufficient groundwork ‘The Jurists’
would use the latent talent pool of law students and researchers as the bedrock to
build on its policy recommendations. In addition to supporting initiatives and ideas
just by way of resources, it would also provide an open forum for critical review of
the same. Primarily a student driven initiative, it will build a corpus of student
researchers in the legal community through a selection process open to all law
schools and colleges.

Since an endeavor of this magnitude would need not only expert inputs and advice
but also support by way of resources, the organization would tie up with various
corporate houses, media agencies, etc.
The organization has been divided into five study groups based on the area of
research being covered. They are:-

 The Socio Legal Jurists

 The Corporate Affairs

 The Jurists Academia

 The Environment, Technology and Law

 The Jurists Corner

‘The Jurists’ will take up a specific focus area that needs research, for each study
group and one season would last for a period of 6 months. Subsequent to the
completion of the research on the chosen topic in a given season, a different
project would be selected for the next season and so on. This period of 6 months is
not rigid and if a study merits more time, may be extended.

Each group of ‘The Jurists’ will be managed and maintained by a organizational

structure comprising of advisory members, mentors, moderators and the members.

The Advisory Board would constitute of known authorities in the focus area of the
season, who have experience and received wide acclaim for their pioneering
research in these areas. It will include faculty of various national and international
universities, well known legal scholars, researchers, lawyers, and may in some
cases include law firms or corporate agencies which are well known in the
respective field and are marked by their expertise in the same. In each working
season of the jurists the advisory board in each group will release a set of topics/
issues that needs to be addressed.
The Mentors will include students, alumni, doctoral candidates and lecturers who
also are actively researching in the particular area and will work to assist the
advisory panel and the members of each group. The mentors will provide further
insight into issues decided by the advisory board and will guide the research at a
more detailed level by actively guiding research on a frequent basis. The mentor
team will act as a link between the advisory board and the members and will assist
and guide them both. Their work will include holding weekly review sessions on the
progress made, filter the ultimate result which would ultimately be compiled in a
research journal.

The Moderators will work as a review panel of the entire set-up, resolve any
hiccups, analyze the work of members, mentors and the advisory panel.

The Members would be the proverbial heart and soul of each project and it is this
group that would engage in the actual research. The membership of this core
group for each season of ‘The Jurists’ is restricted to twenty, selected on the basis
of a rigorous selection process based on their past experience on the issue chosen,
analytical skills and a write up on a topic based on the project being undertaken.
This would be the bedrock and the heart of ‘The Jurists’ and would comprise
mostly of students and research scholars from Law schools. The selected members
are required to work on the different aspects of the issues individually.

The Jurists’ will provide them with financial, logistic and academic support and
resources for the same. Throughout the working period they will report their
progress on a weekly basis to the mentor. The organization will provide them the
best possible means for their work with its wide network of associations and
partnerships.
The Jurists Corner will function as an open inter-disciplinary web forum where
anyone can submit his/her work in any field of law, society or politics. The work will
be critically analyzed, reviewed and commented by others who study it. The article
which receives substantial reviews shall be further sent for a formal double blind
peer review and subsequently published in The Jurists periodical. The authors will
in addition be given a chance to work on a project of their choice as members in
the appropriate group.

At the end of season the work of each group will, amongst other things such as
forming recommendations and commissioned reports for decision making bodies,
Law Commission of India, Planning Commission of India etc. be compiled and
published in a journal which can be used by the legal fraternity. As mentioned
earlier the work will not only include the journal publication but also documentaries
and mass awareness programs promoted by media and publication agencies. The
works will it is envisaged, get appropriate recognition and approval as it represents
the collective efforts of the legal fraternity.
