HISTORY OF ABUYOG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Through the collaborative effort of the Barangay Council of the Abuyog and the
proponent, Mr. Hortencio Laguna Sr., who was then the chairman of the committee of
putting up a secondary school in the barangay, and strongly backed up by Mr. Fernando
S. Babagay, who was then the secretary, a Barangay High School was established on
1979 with 4,321 square meters area and was under the supervision of an elementary
school principal.
After a month of operation, the approval was granted by the Department of
Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) permit no. 24, s. 1979, dated July 6, 1979. By this
period, Encarnation de Leon was the District Supervisor; Victoria L. Madrona was the
principal of Abuyog Elementary School.
The late Fernando S. Babagay was designated as the Teacher-in-Charge of
Abuyog National High School. He was the only secondary school teacher while the
majority were from elementary school teachers. Through the rationalization of the
barangay high school, the school was named as Abuyog National High School. As the
enrolment multiplied, more teachers were assigned to join the teacher-in-charge such as
Nelson Hernan, Rene Dellosa, Cynthia Marillo, Marilyn Laguardia, Beny Pura and Ely
Ragos who were acclaimed as the Pioneer Teachers. They were later followed by
Susan Jasareno, Gemma Oscillada and Eduardo Madre, Daisy Defeo, Eleuterio Sambajon
and Ma. Jean Ladisla followed later as new mentors.
Its population grew bigger and bigger until now. More improvement of its
physical facilities was seen such as additional classrooms, a stage, concrete pathways and
computer sets. The students were trained to be competitive as far as national contests.
Their achievements were accounted to the dedicated teachers and supportive parents and
the community.
In the school year 2010-2011, the school was tapped to become a science oriented
secondary school, 100 first year students were given qualifying examination and the top
forty were housed as the Special Science Class. This was mandated by the DepEd
Order no. 55 series of 2010 and the Regional Memorandum dated July 21, 2010 where
Abuyog National High School together with Rawis National High School were
recognized as Type B science oriented school in Sorsogon City
Currently, the school is striving to meet its target for academic performance.
