SNHS: Its History

On June 24, 1903, the school was established with an initial enrolment of 84
students. It was aimed at providing instruction for “self-government”. The first
teaching unit was an imposing and spacious two-storey building which was semi-
concrete.
The first teachers were mostly American and the medium of instruction was English.
In 1908, the first Filipino teachers trained by the Thomasites started teaching.
The school bearing the name of Sorsogon National High School (SHS) was opened for
secondary education before the second decade of the American regime ended. In the
first academic year, SHS has a faculty composed of Americans and an enrolment of a
handful of students.
In 1912, the school held its first graduation exercise, with five graduates, two boys and
three girls. The years 1930 to 1940 witnessed the achievements of the school in the fields
of academics, athletics and culture.
In 1940-1941, the school introduced double session wherein a teacher has to handle one
class in the morning and another in the afternoon.
On November 15,1941, the school building and the Saint Cecilia dormitory for girls
were burned. Immediately after the Second World War, the classes reopened with huts
and shacks used as temporary classrooms.
In the 1950’s the school building was reconstructed, and upon its completion was
named Sorsogon Provincial High School. The Luzon Tip, the school publication, was
also organized.
In 1959, the new curriculum, the 2-2 plan was implemented wherein the third year
students were devided into two groups, the college preparatory and vocationally-
inclined;
In 1969, Mrs. Priscilla Sabado, the school Principal, pioneered the opening of the
evening class secondary education. This system took a regular student five years to
graduate.
In 1973, the High School evening class had their graduation. In 1975, the Sorsogon
Provincial High School was renamed Sorsogon National High School. In the late 1980’s,
in the administration of Nonita Julian, the school was chosen the regional leaders school
for science and mathematics. The 1980s brought in outstanding students’
accomplishments different fields.
The school now is now departmentalized. There are 9 departments: Filipino, English,
Mathematics, Science, Araling Panlipunan, TLE, MAPEH, Values Education and
Administrative Office.
Departments are headed by full-time head teachers while Administrative Office is
headed by Administrative Officer.
The school is administered by the department of Education through the Regional
Director and the school’s division Superintendent and a school Principal.
Summary of Observation (Field Study 1)

The Learner’s Development and Environment

My Field Study 1 experience at Sorsogon State College was a memorable 18-hour

observation of the class, Grade 11-Organesson with our cooperating teacher Ms. Jaydee
Grefaldeo. During the short period, I was able to gain competence in determining a
school environment that provides social, psychological and physical environment that
is supportive of learning through having a school facilities checklist. A brief description
of the school community and environment was also included in the portfolio and I was
more than glad to discover that the learner’s environment of SSC-LHS does have a
peaceful and clean environment for its learners.

The school is well-fenced and most of facilities are up to date making it easy for
students to move around and do what they have to do within the premises of the
school. The furniture was properly arranged and everything inside the classroom was
well-organized.

I was able to learn that the school campus does have a big impact on students
because it serves as the second home for them. A good environment in the school
campus and classroom is a necessary factor on student’s learning because as they go to
school every day of their lives, they experience things they don’t experience at home,
therefore learning starts to progress. The big impact of it is that students may become
productively successful in all aspects of life including morality, mentality, psychological
and physical being.

Summary of Observation (Field Study 3)

Technology in the Learning Environment

My field study 3 experience is all about Technology in the Learning

Environment. It was a 17-hour observation of the class, Grade-8A Respect at Sorsogon
State College Laboratory High School. The tasks were focused on identifying
similarities and differences between learning resources and be able to come up with its
benefits and its adequacy to facilitate the teaching-learning process.

I was able to learn through observation that the true essence of learning
resources is to improve student’s achievements through supporting their learning. It
helps students in the learning process by allowing them to explore independently. I was
also able to learn and be familiar with different instructional aides, their functions, and
how it helps teachers in the delivery of instruction.

There were also tasks that focused on identifying appropriate instructional

materials to be used by the teachers to accommodate the different learning styles of
students. I have observed how important it is for teachers to understand the differences
in their student’s learning styles and be able to come with different strategies to be used
in their daily activities, curriculum and assessments.

I have also learned that learners and teachers must be able to adapt to new
trends in education. Most learners of this day and age are exposed to wide sources of
information and knowledge making it easy for them to look up any information they
need. As for teachers, it will be easier for them to deliver instruction for the reason that
these newest trends in technology support the learner’s progress in the most convenient
way possible.

Summary of Observation (Field Study 4)

Exploring the Curriculum

My field study 4 experience was all about Exploring the Curriculum. I finished
the 17-hour allotted time for the course at Sorsogon State College Laboratory High
School. I was assigned to my cooperating teacher, Ms. Christine Romorosa. The
experience was all about knowing the intention of the curriculum, identifying the
appropriate assessment strategies used by teachers to evaluate learning outcomes,
establishing a good learning environment, healthy psychological climate for learners,
and other necessary resources that are necessary to maximize learning.

On this course, I was able to observe the each learner has different diverse
background that every teacher must be able to understand and adjust to. I have realized
that teachers must be well rounded and knowledgeable about the diversity of students.
She must be able to treat all students equally and use learning materials which are
suitable for all types of learners. I also have observed that SSC-LHS is very strict
when it comes to the implementation of the curriculum. They are able to utilize creative
and appropriate instructional planning to increase academic performance. Every
teacher is indeed highly trained to deliver effective instruction to learners.

As I have observed, my cooperating teacher is excellent when it comes to making

use of her allotted instructional time to each section that she handles. She is able to
maximize learning because she looks for ways to increase the impact of learning
activities to her students. I have also noticed that teachers use different ways to
evaluate learning outcomes of the students depending on the activities.

Summary of Observation (Field Study 5)

Learning Assessment and Strategies

My field study 5 experience was all about learning assessment and strategies. I
spent my observation at Sorsogon State College Laboratory High School from January
to February,2018. Discussed in the worksheets are the assessment tools that have been
observed in class and the importance the assessment tools used by the cooperating
teacher. I conducted an observation for three classes and I was able to come up with
different assessment tools used in my major. Most assessment tools used are quick-
summaries which require open-ended questions and discussion forums which I find a
good way of having an interactive discussion because students are able to share and
exchange ideas about the lesson.

In this course, I was able to realize that assessment tools are of great help in
determining whether or not the students have learned the lessons and topics being
presented. It helps in the acquisition of learning of of the students through letting the
teacher be aware of how each student performs in class. I have come to know that
assessment tools are characterized by content validity, reliability, fairness, student
engagement, motivation and consequential relevance.
I have also observed that my cooperating teacher used a combination of
traditional and authentic methods of assessment in evaluation although the
traditional method is often used in acquiring higher academic performance of the
students because it provides the teacher a snapshot of what the students know. This
way, the teacher knows where each learner stands. Therefore, the teacher can know
what type of teaching strategies to use to be able to ensure higher academic
performance.

Summary of Observation (Field Study 6)

(On Becoming A Teacher)

My field study 6 experience was all about becoming a teacher. I spent my

observation on the same school, Sorsogon State College Laboratory High School.
Discussed on the worksheets are the qualities that makes a good teacher. I have learned
that teachers must be friendly, must have a good personality, deep knowledge, good
communication skills, effective discipline skills and a passion for teaching profession.

I have observed that my cooperating teacher, Ms. Christine Romorosa has an

engaging personality and teaching style. She is able to hold the attention of students in
all class discussions and promote positive behaviors and change in the classroom. Also
discussed in the portfolio are the characteristics of an effective teacher, that teachers
must be able to explain the subject matter clearly, make difficult topics easy to
understand, stimulate direct and pace interaction with the class, has an aura of seld-
confidence, discusses viewpoints other than her own and must make fair judgements.

I have learned the different responsibilities of a teacher to our country, to the

school, to the people in the community, to students and of course to God. Teachers
must also set a professional growth for her a teacher because professional growth plays
a very important role in the profession. It enables the teacher to keep track of her own
progress and to set goals for the teaching profession.

I have also realized how essential the Code of Conduct for Professional Teachers
is. It serves as a guide for teachers in dealing with everyday situations that teachers
may experience. It is also important in fulfilling duties as a professional teacher
because it allows them t decipher the right thing to do based on their current
perspective and to take responsibility for and to stand by their decisions.

WEEKLY NARRATIVE
(Week 1)

My first week at Sorsogon National High School was hectic. On the 1 st day, I
arrived at the campus at exactly 6:30 AM and went straight to the Principal’s Office to
give the endorsement letter. I was turned over to the Head Teacher of the English
department together with my co practice teaching students. We were then assigned to
different grade levels. I was assigned to Grade 8 at the class of Ms. Gigi Saladino. An
orientation on lesson planning for the DepEd Curriculum was held in the afternoon.

On the 2nd day, I was asked by my cooperating teacher to observe her class at
Grade 8-Wisdom and Grade 8-Prudence. She discussed about literary appreciation. The
next day was still allotted for observation and Ms. Saladino discussed about elements of
a short story. I was amazed to observe how active and participative the students were in
her class.

The 4th day was my 1st demo-teaching. I was so nervous and was not able to sleep
well the night before. I knew I was still on adjustment period. I found it a bit difficult to
prepare the lesson plan, the learning resources to be used for my demo and all the other
preparations needed in just a very short period of time. But I told myself I need to, I just
really need to do it. Luckily, I was still able to pull it off and finish the whole thing until
the next class. Although I was not sure if it was my best, I knew that at one point or
another, I was able to share learning to my students.
The 5th day came, and it was Friday. Finally, I can breathe over the weekends. I
was assigned for a continuation of my previous lesson and teach another topic, which
was about Delivering a Speech of Instruction. This time I was a bit comfortable with
both Grade 8 classes already.

WEEKLY NARRATIVE
(Week 2)

My second week in Grade 8 Wisdom and Grade 8 Prudence class of Ms.

Saladino was a very busy week for me. I observed both classes for 1 day and the
next day was allotted for my 3rd demonstration teaching with the topic Infinitive
Phrases.

During my demo, I was amazed to see how active both grade 8 classes were.
There was even a time that I intended not to mention the summary of our lesson
because when I posed the generalization question, I think 2-3 students in each class
were able to give a more meaningful summary than the summary I have prepared.
Almost everyone in the class are really smart knowing the fact of course, that they
belong to the top section. Their behavior is excellent. They all know when to listen,
when to talk and what appropriate behaviors to show especially when a teacher is
around. I was so lucky to have spent my first 2 weeks with them.

The next days were allotted for the presentation of their story grammar. I
was tasked by my cooperating teacher to facilitate their presentation because she
had to attend to some very important matters. Each group’s presentation were very
detailed and informative. I am more than happy to see that they really exerted
much effort to prepare and deliver their task in the best way they can.
Also, I assisted Ms. Saladino on her ICT class with Grade 7 and 8-SPJ. They
were tasked to create a word collage.
