Advance Foundation Engineering –II

SE 106
Assignment- 3
Bearing capacity of specialized cases and Shallow Foundations
Q1 Find the ultimate bearing capacity of two foundations shown below using the approach defined next to the sketch.

Q2 A circular foundation of 4.0 m diameter is to be constructed for a column of a building. The soil exploration data for
the location is shown below. Calculate the ultimate bearing capacity and total settlement of foundation for the given
case. Comment on suitability of the dimension of foundation. Water table in both the cases is 6.0 m below the
ground surface.

Q3 You are given the soil footing geometry shown in Fig below. Note that, with the GWT on clay, it would be
preferable to keep the footing in sand if possible.

Q4 Design a reinforced cement concrete footing for a 1m wide concrete wall carrying a load of 800 kN/m. The
allowable soil pressure is 200 kN/m2.

Q5 The plan of a mat foundation with 9 columns is shown in Fig below. Assuming that the mat is rigid, determine the
soil pressure distribution. All the columns are of size 0.6 m x 0.6m.
Q6 Proportion a square footing to carry a load of 150 t from a column. The depth of foundation is to be kept at 2m
below ground surface. Maximum permissible settlement of the footing is 40 mm and factor of safety of 3 is required
against shear failure. The subsoil is sand with an average corrected N value of 18 as established from borings. Water
table is at a large depth.

Q7 Proportion strap combined footing for two columns located at the property line as show below. Allowable net
bearing pressure of the soil at foundation level is 300 kPa. Assume that the strap is rigid and the footings provided
are square in shape. Note that the stress distribution is to be uniform beneath the foundation so as to minimize
differential settlement.

Q8 Design a trapezoidal combined footing for two columns (30 cm x 30 cm) carrying column loads of 1.2 MN and 0.90
MN, if the spacing between the two columns is 4m. Take allowable soil pressure as 200 kN/m 2 and the Length of
footing as 5m.
