Purpose: -

This test method covers determination of slump of hydraulic – cement

concrete, both in laboratory and in the field, to monitor the consistency of
unhardened concrete.
• This test method is not considered applicable to non-plastic and
noncohesive concrete.
• This test method is considered applicable to plastic concrete having
coarse aggregate up to 37.5 mm in size.
• Concrete having slumps less than 15 mm may not be adequately plastic
and concretes having slumps greater than about 230 mm may not be
adequately cohesive for this test to have significance. Instruments: -
• Apparatus and tools:
a) Mold: having the base 200 mm in diameter, the top of 100 mm in
diameter, and the height 300 mm as in figure.
b) Tamping rod: straight steel rod having 600 mm length and 16 mm
in diameter.

Procedure: -
1. Take (1:2:4:0.45) ratio of (cement: sand: gravel: water/cement) and find
the cone volume by:
Aggregate Tests 2 nd Stage A

Volume = 𝜋 × ℎ × (𝑟12 + 𝑟1 × 𝑟2 + 𝑟22)

Where:
𝑟1: top radius
𝑟2: bottom radius
Volume = 0.005495 𝑚3
1 = 0.65 (x + 3x + 1.5x) ⟹ x = 0.279
Cement = x ∗ V ∗ ρ = 0.279 ∗ 0.005495 ∗ 1400 = 2.1463 Kg
Sand = x ∗ 3 ∗ V ∗ ρ = 0.279 ∗ 3 ∗ 0.005495 ∗ 1800 = 8.2783 Kg
Gravel = x ∗ 1.5 ∗ V ∗ ρ = 0.279 ∗ 1.5 ∗ 0.005495 ∗ 1700 = 3.9094 Kg
Water = Cement × W/C
2. Calculate the mass of concrete mix by taking the volume of cone and
multiplying it by concrete density (γc = 2400 Kg/m3).
3. Dampen the mold and place it on a flat, moist, non-absorbent (rigid)
surface. It shall be held firmly in place during filling by the operator
standing on the two-foot pieces.
4. Fill the mold in three layers, each approximately one third the volume of
the mold.
5. Rod each layer with 25 strokes of the tamping rods, uniformly distribute
the strokes over the cross section of each layer, so that the strokes just
penetrate in to the under lying layer.
6. In filling and rodding the top layer, heap the concrete above the mold
before rodding is started. If the rodding operation result in subsidence of
the concrete below the top edge of the mold, always add additional
concrete to peep and excess of concrete above the top of the mold.
7. After the top layer has been rodded, strike off the surface of the concrete
by means of a screening and rolling motion of the tamping rod.
8. Continue to hold the mold down firmly and remove concrete from the
area surrounding the base of the mold to preclude interference with the
movement of slumping concrete.
9. Remove the mold immediately from the concrete by raising it carefully in
a vertical direction. Raise the mold 300 mm in (5±2) second by a steady
upward lift with no lateral or torsional motion.
10.Complete the entire test from the start of the filling through removal of
the mold without interruption and complete it with in an elapsed time of
2.5 minute.
11.Immediately measure the slump by determining the vertical difference
between the top of the mold and the displaced original centre of the top
surface.

Types of Slump

Results: -
• This experiment depends on American Standard ASTM C143/C143 M-03.
• The sample is ok if the slump is between (15-230) mm we say it’s (O.K)
• Volume = 𝜋 × ℎ × (𝑟12 + 𝑟1 × 𝑟2 + 𝑟22)
• Water = Cement × W/C
Group w/c Water (Kg) Slump (mm) Slump Type
G1 0.55 1.1804 0 True Slump
G2 0.6 1.2877 125-2500 Shear
G3 0.65 1.3950 211 Failure
