Improvement of reliability of LWL cards (AFB635A01) and bus coupler cards (UFB 660
A01 & UFB 701A01) of three phase locomotives by testing QFBR 1478 C and 2478C
transmitter & receivers as per SMI/258.

 LWL card – AFB 635 B08 provides Fibre Optical connection between Bus Station and Gate Unit.
 There are Two cards in each SR rack in 1-2, 3-4 Slots.
 The Fibre Optical Transmitter / Receiver in (LWL) AF 635 B08 card converts the electrical firing
pulses received from AS & NS controller into corresponding light pulses for potential free and
interference free transfer to the Gate Unit.
 The feedback signal also transferred optically is converted into electrical impulses.
 There are 8 Channels each for transmitter and receiver.
 For Transmitter –
 Optical logic ‘0’ – for Signal level < - 40 dB
 Optical logic ‘1’ – for Signal level > - 20 dB
 For Receiver –
 Optical logic ‘0’ – for Signal level < - 40 dB 15
 Optical logic ‘1’ – for Signal level – in between – 24 dB to 12 dB

Testing of Transmitter –
 Insert Power supply card and MVB card inside the CEL.
 Apply + 5 Volt on Test Point from REGA pin 28.
 Measure dB value at optical power receiver meter.
 The value of optical power should be in between -12 dB to -16 dB.
 If less than – 16 dB : a balancing resistor 70 Ω soldered in between point T1 & T2.
 If greater than -12 dB : the resistor must be unsoldered.
 If not possible to bring the dBm level within specified limits through balancing resistor, transmitter
considered as defective and should be replaced.

Testing of Receiver –
o Carried out the same procedure with Optical signal is injected to the receiver and
corresponding electrical signal is measured at REGA pin 3.
o The voltage should be + 5 Volt in Optical signal switched ON condition
o The voltage in between 0 to 0.08 V if Optical signal switch OFF condition.

RAP ON SENSOR OF 3 – Ø LOCO
Adoption of IGBT type speed sensors in locomotives with GTO based traction
converter as per RDSO MS 0458.

 GTO locomotives and IGBT locomotives have different type of speed sensors.
 In GTO locomotives, in order to resolve the direction of motion the signal is inverted.
 In case of IGBT locomotives, the direction is resolved by the shifting the signal by 90 degree.
