Installing the Dataset
You should have downloaded a dataset from the Before You Begin document. The following steps will guide you to
installing the dataset.

1. Make sure all applications are closed.


2. Unzip Setting Up Models ‐ SA_TRNC01642‐10001 Dataset.zip to your desktop.
3. Save the files to a temporary location.

Creating a new Document
OpenPlant Modeler starts like any other MicroStation based program. It is installed on your local hard drive and the
project workspaces are stored either on your local hard drive or on a shared network drive.

1. Double-click on the Bentley OpenPlant Modeler icon on your desktop.

2. Verify that you are in the OPModeler_Imperial project.


3. In the File Open dialog, click New File.

4. Type Training Model in the File Name field.

5. Click Save.
The File Open dialog returns.

6. Highlight your file and click Open.

Creating Units, Systems and Pipelines
Before you can begin modeling, you must have Units, Systems and Pipelines to associate the components to. This is
how they are stored in the database and how you may query them at a later time.

1. In the Standard Preferences tab, click the arrow in the Pipeline list.

2. Select New....
The following dialog opens.

3. In the Associations tab, click Add in the Unit field.

4. Type WPF in the Name field.
5. Type Water Processing Facility in the Description field.

6. Click Save, to close the Create Unit dialog.


7. In the Associations tab, click Add in the Service field.
The following dialog opens.

8. Type RW in the Name field and Raw Water in the Description field.


9. Click Save, to close the Create Service dialog.

10. In the Create Pipeline dialog, make sure that Unit is set to WPF and Service is set to RW, then select the Properties tab.

11. Type L100 in the Number field.


12. Select EX‐OPM from the Specification list.
13. Set the Nominal diameter to 4” and the Insulation Thickness to 2”.

When finished, your dialog should look like the image below.

14. Click Save.


To create additional pipelines, continue to click New from the list. Set the Unit to WPF and the Service to RW, then, select the Properties
tab and enter the correct values from the table below to build all of the remaining pipelines.

Editing a Pipeline
If you make a mistake while creating pipelines, they can be fixed. The next exercise will show you how to edit a pipeline.

1. Select the Tasks tab.

2. Expand the Piping group.


3. In row W, select Manage Pipelines.

The following dialog opens.

4. Select Pipeline WPF‐RW‐L100‐EX‐OPM by selecting the box in the Name field.


This will activate the Pipeline Manager tools.

5. Click Edit Selected Pipeline(s).
6. Select the Properties tab.

7. In the Design Values group, change the Nominal Diameter to 10in.

8. Click Save.
9. Close the PIpeline Manager.
Warning: It is acceptable to change the pipeline properties in this manner prior to placement in the model, caution should be taken once
the pipeline has been placed in the model with piping components.

Adding Reference Files
We will now attach the reference files Col_Lines.dgn, PlotPlan.dgn, and Structure.dgn from the dataset.

1. Create a folder on your desktop named Reference Files.


2. Copy the files from the dataset into this folder.
3. With OpenPlant Modeler open, select Tools > Reference > Attach References.
4. Navigate to the Reference Files folder on your desktop.

5. Select all three files and click Open.


6. Click OK for each file as they are brought in.

7. Select Fit View in each window to see the referenced files.

8. Close OpenPlant Modeler.
