Probability and Stochastic Processes

Fall 2019
Some Exercises during the Lecture

1. Set up a probability model for the tossing of a fair coin.

2. Set up a probability model for the rolling of a fair die.

3. If two fair coins are tossed, determine the probability that at

least one of them shows 'Heads'.

4. The probability that student A will fail a certain statistics

examination is 0.5, the probability that student B will fail

the examination is 0.2 and the probability that both students

A and B will fail the examination is 0.1.

a) What is the probability that at least one of these two

students will fail the examination?

b) What is the probability that neither student A nor stu-

dent B will fail the examination?

c) What is the probability that exactly one of the two stu-

dents will fail the examination?

5. In a lottery 6 out of 49, what is the probability to have ticked

exactly the 6 winning numbers? What is the probability to

have ticked 4 out of the 6 winning numbers? How would the

latter probability change if we were allowed to tick 7 instead

of 6 numbers?

6. (Birthday Problem:) In a group of 40 students, what is

the probability that there are at least two students with the

birthday on the same day? (Assume that for everyone, each

day of the year is equally likely to be the birthday).
