TUTORIAL 2- PROBABILITY

1. A fair dice is thrown once. Find the probabilities that the score is
(a) bigger than 3
(b) bigger than or equal to 3
(c) an odd number
(d) a prime number
(e) bigger than 3 and a prime number
(f) bigger than 3 or a prime number or both
(g) bigger than 3 or a prime number, but not both

2. Two fair dice are thrown simultaneously. Find the probability that
(a) the total is 7
(b) the total is at least 8
(c) the total is a prime number
(d) neither of the scores is a 6
(e) at least one of the scores is a 6
(f) exactly one of the scores is a 6
(g) the two scores are the same
(h) the difference between the scores is an odd number

3. A bag contains ten counters , of which six are red and four are green. A
counter is chosen at random; its color is noted and it is replaced in the bag.
A second counter is then chosen at random . Find the probabilities that
(a) Both counters are red
(b) Both counters are green
(c) Just one counter is red
(d) At least one counter is red
(e) The second counter is red

4. A bag contains eight marbles. Three marbles are red and five are blue. Two
marbles are drawn from the bag without replacement.
(a) Write down the probability that the first marble drawn is red.
(b) Draw a tree diagram to represent the information.
(c) Find the probability that both marbles are blue.

5. A corporation was concerned with the basic educational skills of its workers
and decided to offer a selected group of them separate classes in reading
and practical mathematics classes . Of these workers, 40% signed up for the
reading classes and 50% for the practical mathematics classes. Of those
signing up for the reading classes, 30% signed up for the mathematics
classes.
(a) What is the probability that a randomly selected worker signed up for
both classes?
(b) What is the probability that a randomly selected worker who signed up
for the mathematics classes for signed up for the reading classes?
(c) What is the probability that a randomly selected worker signed up for at
least one of these two classes ?

6. A student can enter a course either as a beginner(73% of all students) or as

a transferring student( 27% of all students ). It is found that 62% of
beginners eventually graduate and that 78% of transferring students
eventually graduate .
(a) Find:
i. The probability that a randomly chosen student is a beginner who will
eventually graduate
ii. The probability that a randomly chosen student will eventually
graduate
(b) If a student eventually graduates , what is the probability that the
student entered as a transferring student?
