Assignment No. 08

Q1: Differentiate between constant and falling head permeability test?

The falling head permeability test has a high dispersion and is not sensitive to changes in porosity. The
minimum number of repetitions is established for each type of test. The constant head permeability test
is a viable and economical alternative to measure the permeability of the material.

Highlights

•The falling head permeability test has a high dispersion and is not sensitive to changes in porosity.

•The minimum number of repetitions is established for each type of test.

•The constant head permeability test is a viable and economical alternative to measure the permeability
of the material.

•The experimental results showed a direct relationship between the porosity and the permeability as
expected.
What is the purpose of the constant head permeability test?
The objective of constant head permeability test is to determine the coefficient of permeability of a soil.
Coefficient of permeability helps in solving issues related to: Yield of water bearing strata. Stability of
earthen dams.

Q2: which permeability test is used for the following test

1 silt
2 Clay
3 Sand

Clay

It is a valid test for soils with a high rate of flow like sands and gravels, but also some clay soils.
Falling Head Test allows the head to decrease as water infiltrates the sample, diminishing the
pressure over the course of the test. Falling head methods are generally limited to fine-grained soils.

Clay is impermeable, or at least it has a very low permeability. The grains in clay are so fine that the
spaces between the grains are extremely...

Silt

The constant head permeability test is a laboratory experiment conducted to determine the
permeability of soil. The soils that are suitable for this tests are sand and gravels. Soils with silt content
cannot be tested with this method. The test can be employed to test granular soils either reconstituted
or disturbed.

Sand

Information on the permeability of sand is often required in its utilization as an engineering material. ...
Barber's falling head permeability test (I)2 has been widely used for the laboratory determination of the
perme- ability of sands. 3 This method is simple to use and does not require complicated equipment.

Permeability is a property of foundry sand with respect to how well the sand can vent, i.e. how well
gases pass through the sand. And in other words, permeability is the property by which we can know
the ability of material to transmit fluid/gases.
