SURFACE PREPARATION

SURFACE PREPARATION STANDARDS

Hand Tool Cleaning or Power Tool Cleaning is Required Prior to
Stopaq Application

(FOTO)
St 2 – Hand Tool Cleaning (equivalent to SSPC.SP2) (FOTO)
Removal of all rust scale, mill scale, loose rust and loose paint to the degree specified by
wire brushing, scraping, chipping, and sanding or other hand impact tools or by a
combination of these methods. The substrate should be dry, have a faint metallic sheen
and also be free of oil, grease, dust, soil, salts and other contaminants.

St 3 - Power Tool Cleaning (equivalent to SSPC.SP3)

Removal of all rust scale, mill scale, loose paint, and loose rust to the degree specified by
power wire brushes, power impact tools, power grinders, power sanders or by a
combination of these methods. The substrate should be dry, have a pronounced metallic
sheen and also be free of oil, grease, dirt, soil, salts and other contaminants. Surface
should not be buffed or polished smooth. The Bristleblaster is an ideal tool to be used in
order to achieve the optimum surface cleanliness.

Stopaq Surface Preparation Verification (St 2 or better)

Prepared surface may be verified using a small piece of Stopaq Wrappingband CZ(H).
Cut a piece of Stopaq Wrappingband CZ(H) around 125mm (5”) in length and fold back
underneath the Wrappingband the last 25mm (1”) (so that the Stopaq does not stick to
your fingers). Apply the Stopaq on to the prepared surface with the folded end up and
press the coating material firmly onto the surface to facilitate adhesion to the full surface.
Let set 2-3 minutes
(FOTO)to allow flow. Using the folded back area, pull toward yourself peeling
(FOTO)
off the Stopaq slowly and firmly at an angle of 135° (using a speed of circa ¼” per
second). The result should be a cohesive fracture of the wrappingband with the netting
being pulled out.
If more than 99% of the surface remains covered then the surface preparation is
adequate and the Stopaq application may proceed. If the pulled back Stopaq is covered
with contaminants, the surface should be re-prepared. If necessary, de-grease using
Bla
isopropanol alcohol or detergent soapy water. Bla
Repeat verification until a minimum of 99% coverage is achieved.

Straight or spiral wrapped Stopaq as close as

possible to the flange.

Use FN4100 (20°C) to smear the whole surface

including bolts and nuts. Take care to prevent
FN4100 smudging the sides of the flange

Make a 45° angle with FN4100 Flange Filler around If no painters tape is used, remove ALL FN4100
the exterior sides of the flange, once all the steel from the side of the flange
surfaces have been covered with FN4100 Putty.

Depending on the dimensions of the flange, several

straight wraps of Stopaq Wrappingband might be
used to protect the sides of the flanges.

The total width of the Stopaq Wrappingband CZH

must be greater than the length of the bolts.

Pre-cut geotextile to a length equal to the

circumference of the flange plus a 2” overlap and to
a width sufficient to cover the wholeof the flange (as
shown in the drawing).

Wrap the geotextile around the flange and use

outerwrap for mechanical protection. Begin with a
central circumferential wrap

ends.
