Customer loyalty programs come in traditional forms, such as point programs and VIP
member clubs. To stand out from the crowd, some businesses have found ways to build new
rewards programs and inspire customer loyalty.
Take Starbucks as an example. While using mobile apps to manage loyalty programs is
common these days, when Starbucks created My Starbucks Rewards through the Starbuck
app back in 2009, it was still a brand new idea. The rewards program allowed customers to
earn “stars” with each purchase, and the stars could then be used to get free drinks and food.
Reward-program members received other benefits as well, such as free in-store refills, the
ability to pay by phone, and personalized suggestions based on previous orders.
Besides Starbucks’s reward program, which has more than 14 million members in the
United States, the company’s mobile app is also a big winner. With a simple, user-friendly
design, Starbucks’s app includes a convenient location feature that enables users to locate
nearby stores and then view menu items and place orders there. This way, customers can skip
lines and save time. The Starbucks’s app can even enhance a customer’s in-store experience.
