1 Introduction
An ADR 14/02 field of view test was performed on the left hand external mirror.
The vehicle was tested at American Vehicle Sales in the workshop on a flat level floor

This testing is necessary as one element of the Low Volume New compliance plate application for
the OVS Ford F-150 vehicle.

2 Test Vehicle Details

3 Test Equipment
Location American Vehicle Sales Workshop
A smooth level surface and a minimum of 40 m
x 8 m area. Facilities to allow tests to be
conducted during daylight hours, though it was
not necessary.

Screens White vinyl sheet

Screens. A mobile vertical test screen was
required to display reflected images. The
screens consisted of a frame and a vinyl flat
white finish and a surface boundary of
approximately 2.5 m high by 6 m wide.

Light Source and power Supply Super Force H3/12V Quartz Halogen Bulbs
Light source and power supply consisted of two
quartz halogen bulbs. The lamps were mounted
on a fixture which is capable of being moved
around the test area. The distance between the
lamps and their relative orientation is adjustable.
The vehicles power supply was used via the 12v
power source.

Vehicle Ballast 5x weight bags @ 68kg each

Ballast was required to simulate occupant mass
for each seating position. Weighted bags were
used for this function. The ballasts were
prepared to suit multiples of 68 kg. Photos of
weights are supplied in Appendix A

H Point Machine Dimensional eye ellipse test component (3D

EETC). A three dimensional representation of
the eye ellipse contours appropriate to the
drivers seating position in the vehicle was
manufactured. The eye ellipse used had been
specified for the design normal driving and
riding seat track travel.

4 Scope

To perform a field of view test on the above mentioned vehicle in accordance with the requirement of ADR
14/02. The sample vehicle is fitted with flat mirror glass to the left hand side external mirrors. The driver’s
side has been changed due to when originally produced it was fitted with a convex mirror glass. Details of
the mirror glass have been supplied from the manufacturer and are found in the supporting evidence folder.
The drivers mirror has not been addressed in this report as per requirements of ADR 14/02.

5 Test Method

Field of View Test

The correct relationship of the 95th percentile eye ellipse to the vehicle was determined by the layout
procedures in Circulars 0-12-6 and 0-12-7. The vehicle was positioned about a reference line on the AVS
workshop floor so that it lies within the vertical plane through the longitudinal center line of the vehicle.
Ballast was added to the vehicle for the driver and each of five occupants. The ballast was 68 kg for each
occupant and was located at each seating position.
The driver’s seat was moved to the rearmost normal driving position and the seat back angle was set to 40
degrees

The screen was positioned so that it was in contact with the widest part of the vehicle and normal to the
longitudinal reference line. The distance from the contact edge of the screen to the longitudinal reference
line was measured and recorded.
The screen was then relocated to a position so that it was 11 m rearward of the rearmost point on the eye
ellipse and normal to the longitudinal reference line.
The height above the floor of the uppermost point of the mirror reflecting surface was determined as being
1300mm.
This height was then marked on the edge of the screen. The widest point was then aligned to meet the floor
2.4 m outboard of the widest point of the vehicle.

The left, right, upper and lower boundaries of vision provided by the mirror were determined by using the
technique described in Section 6.1.2.2 of Circular 14/02-9-1. Determine whether the area included within
the boundaries includes the full triangle on the test screen. Partial obscuration by the rear body was
ignored.

One light source was placed so that it casted the shadow of the left hand edge of the 3D EETC onto the left
hand edge of the external mirror and the other source so that it casted the shadow of the right hand edge of
the 3D EETC onto the right hand edge of the mirror. The mirror was adjusted so that the two reflected
edges were symmetrically disposed in relation to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The light sources
were checked to ensure they were still correctly positioned. The shadow boundaries were then marked on
the test screen. The required angles of vision were calculated from the measured positions of the shadow
boundaries, the distance from the screen to the mirror and the projected horizontal width of the mirror in
the vertical transverse plane.
The upper and lower boundaries of the field of vision were determined in a similar fashion by positioning
the two light sources in an approximately vertical plane and casting shadows from the top and bottom
edges of the mirror.

Photographs were taken of all the reflected images.

When the mirror is tilted in the horizontal and vertical directions the total movement the total reflectivity
range was calculated
21.4 degrees Downwards was equal to 4310 mm of reflectivity range
12.2 degrees Upwards was equal to 2378 mm of reflectivity range
8.2 degree Inwards was equal to 1585 mm of reflectivity range
14.4 degrees Outwards was equal to 2824 mm of reflectivity range
