Strategies in writing an English poem among HHCA Gr.10 students

 Know your goal, you need to know what you are trying to accomplish before you begin
any project.
 Find your trigger, When you begin a poem, start with a clear, concrete situation, image
or idea. Many poets are inspired by a "trigger" they have encountered in real life.
 Find purpose, Poetry is an art form that makes use of metaphors, allusions and more.
Whenever possible, instead of explicitly stating what it is you're trying to say, select a
precise image or analogy that vividly conveys that same idea.
 Focus on a single idea, feeling or experience.
 Let the poem be between 20 and 30 lines; let each line be 10 or more syllables long.
 Know what type of poetry you should use, is it Sonnet? Limerick? Or a Haiku.
 Know the meaning of poetry, poetry is a form of literature that uses aesthetic and
rhythmic qualities of language such as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre to
evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.
 Know what theme you should use, is it Romance? Holiday? Seasons? Poetry of life and
death? Nature? Or Motivational?.
 Know the structures of poetry, there are four structures of poetry which is Stanza,
Meter, Rhyme, Line break.
 Use images, “BE A PAINTER IN WORDS,” say UWEC English professor emerita, poet, and
songwriter Peg Lauber. She says poetry should stimulate six senses.
