Mathematical Induction

1. The Principle of Mathematical Induction Theorem

If a statement about natural numbers satisfies the following two conditions, then the statement is true for all
natural numbers.

Condition I: The statement is true for the natural number I.

Condition II: If the statement is true for some natural number k, it’s also true for the next natural number k+1.

2. Structure of an induction proof.

Step 1: Show that when n = 1, both sides are equal.

Step 2: Suppose the statement is true for k. Then we need to show it’s true for k + 1.

Step 3: Draw conclusion.

Example 1: Prove 2 + 4 + 8 + … +2n = n(n+1).

Example 2: Show that 14 + 18 + 22 + … + (4n+10) = 2n(n+6)

n(n  1)(2n  1)
