SKILL 1 SELECT AND USE A DMM TO MEASURE VOLTAGE FOR

A GIVEN APPLICATION

Procedure Overview
In this procedure, you will select a DMM to use for a given application.
Be sure to observe the IEC 1010 category and the voltage rating when making
your selection.

 1. Perform the following substeps to select a meter to use for the following
application.
 Application: Testing the feeder circuit voltage to a 480 VAC, three-phase
motor.

AVAILABLE DMMs
DMM No. IEC 1010 Category Voltage Rating
1 CAT II 600 VAC
2 CAT III 1000 VAC
3 CAT I 600 VAC

A. Select the correct DMM based on the IEC 1010 category.

DMM Selected _____________________________________________
You should select DMM 2, which has a CAT III rating. This meter can be
used on three-phase systems and equipment.
B. Now make sure the DMM you selected in substep A has a voltage rating
high enough to measure the voltage.
Does the selected DMM have a sufficient voltage rating?

__________________________________________________ (Yes/No)
You should find that the selected DMM has sufficient voltage rating.
Therefore, DMM 2 should be used for this application.

NOTE
Depending on the size of motor, a CAT IV meter may need to be used.

SKILL 1 SELECT AND USE A DMM TO MEASURE VOLTAGE FOR A GIVEN APPLICATION

 2. Select a DMM to use for the following application.

Application: Three-phase voltage (600 VAC) at a service entrance.

AVAILABLE DMMs
DMM No. IEC 1010 Category Voltage Rating
1 CAT II 1000 VAC
2 CAT II 600 VAC
3 CAT I 600 VAC
4 CAT IV 1000 VAC

DMM Selected ________________________________________________

 Since you are dealing with a service entrance in this application, you should
select DMM 4. It is a CAT IV meter with a 1000 VAC rating.
 3. Select a DMM to use for the following application.
 Application: Checking the voltage at a standard single-phase wall outlet.

AVAILABLE DMMs
DMM No. IEC 1010 Category Voltage Rating
1 CAT II 750 VAC
2 CAT IV 1000 VAC
3 CAT I 600 VAC

DMM Selected ________________________________________________

 For this application, DMM 1 will work.
 4. Locate a DMM that meets the requirements of the application in step 3.
 The meter you select should be CAT II rated and have a voltage rating of
at least 600 VAC. The Amprobe meter supplied with the 990-MC1F system
meets these requirements.
