SKILL 4 TEST AN AUTOMATIC INPUT SWITCH

Procedure Overview
In this procedure, you will test the operation of an automatic input switch
using out-of-circuit testing procedures. To do this, you will insert faults into
a limit switch using the FaultPro Computer-Based Fault Insertion Software.

 1. Perform a lockout/tagout on the main power circuit breaker of the 990-MC1F.

 2. Make sure a USB cable is connected between the 990-MC1F and the PC.
 3. Start up the FaultPro software and login using your ID number and password.
The Student Options window should open.
 4. Perform the following substeps to do an out-of-circuit test on the limit switch.
A. Measure the resistance of both the N.O. and N.C. contacts of 1LS, shown
in figure 4-1, when its actuator is not actuated. Record your measurements.
1LS Not Activated:
Resistance of the N.O. contact ___________________________ (Ohms)
Resistance of the N.C. contact ___________________________ (Ohms)
Component Status _________________________________ (Good/Bad)
The resistance between the N.O. terminals should be infinite. The resis-
tance between the N.C. terminals should be at or near zero.

B. Manually operate and hold 1LS. Then measure the resistance.

1LS Activated:
Resistance of the N.O. contact ___________________________ (Ohms)
Resistance of the N.C. contact ___________________________ (Ohms)
Component Status _________________________________ (Good/Bad)
The resistance of both contacts should change when the switch is acti-
vated. The limit switch is good.

SKILL 4 TEST AN AUTOMATIC INPUT SWITCH

 5. Perform the following substeps to enter Single Fault mode.

A. Open the Class folder, if required,
B. Open the LAP 2: Systems Troubleshooting option.
C. Select any skill from the list.
D. Click the Single Fault Mode button.
 6. Perform the following substeps to insert a fault into 1LS and test it.
A. Type 27 and press Enter to insert fault 27, which is an open in the N.O.
contact of 1LS.
B. Measure and record the resistance of the N.O. switch contacts of 1LS
when the switch arm is not activated and then when it is activated.
Resistance of N.O. contacts, not activated __________________ (Ohms)
Resistance of the N.O. activated _________________________ (Ohms)
Component Status _________________________________ (Good/Bad)
This time you should measure infinite resistance in both cases. This indi-
cates that the N.O. contact is bad.
 7. Click the Clear Fault button to clear the fault.
 8. Perform the following substeps to insert another fault into 1LS and test it.
A. Type 1 and press Enter to insert fault 1, which is an open in the N.C.
contacts of 1LS.
B. Measure the resistance of the N.C. switch contacts of 1LS when the arm
is not activated and then when it is activated.
Resistance of N.C. Contacts, Not Activated ________________ (Ohms)
Resistance of N.C. Contacts, Activated ____________________ (Ohms)
Component Status _________________________________ (Good/Bad)
This time you should measure infinite resistance from the terminals of
1LS in both actuator positions. This indicates that the contact is open and
the limit switch is bad.
 9. Click the Clear Fault button to clear the fault.
 10. Exit the FaultPro software.
 11. If this is your last activity for the day, return the lockout/tagout equipment to
your instructor. If not, continue.
