The drainage systems of supermarkets and retail outlets are vital to

the proper running of the store. We focus on prevention and

maintenance because emergency repair of these issues is quite costly

and in severe cases can temporarily shut the supermarket down. Our

typical services for retailers are;

High intensity cleaning and vacuumation as part of our maintenance

plans.

CCTV drain surveys, sonar drain tracing and dye testing to eliminate
risks and keep the drains flowing properly

Full repairs if a problem occurs. Delivered quickly and professionally.

Drainage Maintenance Goals Keep channels and basins clear of debris Maintain flood carrying and

storage capacity Protect water quality

Drainage crews are sent to known problem areas first. Once these problematic areas have been

addressed, an attempt is made to clean an entire route at once and to systematically work through

the entire system, as equipment and resources are available. • Drainage ditches are considered

operational if they are not creating a significant drainage problem. Drainage ditches are considered

clean when approximately 95% of the brush and sediment is removed. • Drainage structures causing
significant damage to either the road or private property are taken care of ASAP. • Structures that

have been problematic either during the winter or the spring are scheduled for cleaning and repair

on an as needed basis during the summer months (See Problem Site Maintenance Plan) •

Pequannock Township maintains a capital program for de-silting and desnagging all major open

channel conveyance systems.

For commercial buildings including office structures, schools, hospitals, retail outlets and

restaurants, our single wall or N-12 small diameter pipe and fittings form a complete

drainage system from the top of the building to the storm sewers. Made from high density

polyethylene (HDPE), our pipe offers significant benefits over PVC pipe such as: better

impact strength during shipping and handling, no edge beveling, no special adapters, and

better chemical and abrasion resistance.

Top maintenance tips for businesses

Fortunately, keeping on top of wastewater disposal responsibilities and
preventing drainage issues from getting out of hand is not difficult. Just
consider the following basic guidelines:

 Ensure everyone in your company knows what not to dispose of

down the drain: wipes, sanitary products, fat, oil and grease (FOG)
are known to be a leading cause of blocked drains.
 Be prepared for extreme weather by making sure your drains are
able to operate at full capacity. This is particularly important
seasonally and may go a long way to protecting your business
from flooding.
 Arrange a CCTV survey of your drains to identify any defects or
blockages before they become a problem, and have pipes cleaned
out regularly. Your contractor will advise on frequency depending
on the result of these inspections.
 Consider switching your water and sewerage service supplier.
From April 2017, the new Water Act has meant that all
0commercial, public sector and not-for-profit organisations in
England can now choose a water and sewerage provider and
negotiate a package that suits their particular needs, whether that
be for more efficient customer service, tailored packages, more
proactive advice services or different pricing.
 Provide suitable disposal units for sanitary waste.
Using advanced technology, we can map and survey your wastewater assets to assess their
condition. We may carry out a planned programme of maintenance, cleaning and checking
all the drains and sewers regularly to keep the system operating to specification — and that
includes interceptors, gullies, aco drains and grease traps. Of course we also repair any
damaged or failing pipes. Routine faults are generally fixed immediately, whilst in more
complex cases, we will restore flow as a priority before carrying out the full repair outside
trading hours.
Our services for retail clients include:

 CCTV survey and inspection

 Sewer and drain unblocking and cleaning
 Drainage and sewer management and maintenance
 Renovation and repair of drains and sewers
Examples of our work :

Long term fridge flooding in supermarket

A major blockage threatened to close a supermarket chain’s flagship store in the North

West, until UKDN stepped in to deal with flooding. We removed the blockage and corrected
an original design flaw overnight so that the store was fully stocked and open for business
the next morning.

Drainage services to the retail sector

Retail is a broad label for wide range of businesses and environments. Loosely, it could be
described as any operation that depends on the paying public: hotels, leisure, sports,
catering, stores, shops, shopping centres, wholesalers, the list goes on.

For retailers, a sewerage incident is bad news. Whatever the business, a blocked toilet,
smelly sink or damaged drain can be disastrous, and is definitely not the way to attract new
customers, or keep your old ones. You could even be forced to close your doors until it’s
fixed

Many sewer backups are caused by tree roots, broken lateral pipes, and
blockages in a municipal mainline. Here are some steps you can take to
keep your pipes flowing:4

 Grease. Dispose of grease or cooking oil in heat-proof containers.

Don't pour it down the drain!
 Paper. Only toilet paper should be flushed down toilets. Other types
of paper may cause clogs.
 Roots. Have a licensed plumber inspect your sewer lines for tree
roots and have roots trimmed if necessary.
 Battery Backup. If you have a sump pump, consider installing a
battery that will keep your pump operating if the power goes out.5
 Backwater Prevention Valve. Consider hiring a licensed plumber to
install backwater prevention valve, which can prevent wastewater
from backing up into your building.
 Proper Connections. Sanitary sewers are separate from storm
sewers. The former carry sewage while the latter carry rainwater.
Don't connect French drains, sump pumps and other elements of a
storm sewer to your sanitary sewer! Such connections are illegal and
likely to result in clogs.

SYMPTOMS OF A SEWER OR DRAIN

LINE ISSUE
Handling a backed-up drain line, overflowed toilet, or septic system failure
before you have extensive sewage damage is not an easy feat. That is why it is
important to identify the symptoms of a potential failure early – before it turns into
a catastrophic event.

Gurgling Sound within the Drain Line

Noticing an odd sound when you flush the toilet or run your faucet? This could be
the presence of air bubbles within the drain line, resulting from a small leak within
the pipe. This sound could be the first sign an issue is forming and needs to be
addressed before you have sewage damage.

Pipes Slow to Drain

Do you notice your toilet is flushing slower than normal, or your kitchen sink is
taking longer to drain? A leak or clog could be present or forming within your
drain lines.
Sewage Smell

Under normal circumstances, you will never smell raw sewage coming from your
drain lines. If you detect an odd, distasteful smell, it is time to call a professional
to rectify the situation quickly. The longer you wait, the worse the damage could
be.

Water Pooling around Sewer Lines

Every property has a sewer line running from the city service or septic tank. If you
notice water pooling around those areas, call a professional right away. This
presence indicates an issue with your sewer line and could cause severe sewage
damage to your home or business.

Sewer Water Overflowing in Toilets or Sinks

If you notice an overflow of sewage in either your toilet, bathtub, or sink, then you
have a hazardous condition on your hands. You need to call a professional
immediately to eliminate any potential viruses, bacteria, or microbes that could be
present in the area.
