CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

School, colleges and universities have no worth without student. Students are most

essential asset for any educational institute. The social and economic development of the country

is directly linked with student academic performance. The students’ performance (academic

achievement) plays an important role in producing the best quality graduates who will become

great leader and manpower for the country thus responsible for the country’s economic and

social development as stressed by Ali et.al, (2009).

Student academic performance measurement has received considerable attention in

previous research, it is challenging aspects of academic literature, and science student

performance are affected due to social, psychological, economic, environmental and personal

factors. These factors strongly influence on the student performance, but these factors vary from

person to person and country to country as cited by Mushtaq and Khan (2012).

However, as stressed by Jibrin, Musa and Shittu (2017) the use of technology is

changing the way things are done, including the work in institutions where the teaching and

learning process required a great deal of improvement. Knowing fully that internet is an essential

tool for facilitating academic activities in institutions of learning have invested heavily in

establishing internet services in their schools. The services provided by internet have had a major

impact in the university context, in organization and in teaching and learning methods. The

Internet has made computers across the globe interconnected.

1
According to Emeka and Nyeche (2016) the internet today is a worldwide entity whose

nature cannot be easily or simply defined. To many, the internet is a large computer network

linking together millions of smaller computers at numerous sites in various countries belonging

to thousands of business, government, research, educational and other organisations. To the

internet users, the internet is a global community-one with a very active life. In today world, the

Internet plays a vital role in the teaching, research and learning process in academic institutions.

Thus, the advent of the Internet has heralded the emergence of a new form of knowledge

production and distribution – the soft form.

This new form of information resources has as their greatest advantage, a virtually

unlimited wealth of information resources which is widely readily available and accessible to

hundreds of millions of people simultaneously in many parts of the world as cited by Kumar and

Kaur (2006). In addition, Amaoge and Igwebuike (2016) believe that the internet has

increasingly become an invariable asset in education in terms of learning, teaching and research.

The use of internet in the tertiary institutions is an exciting prospect especially when the rugged

terrain is the significant impediment to obtain information for the vast majority of people.

Fasae and Aladeniyi (2012) pinpoint that for the developing countries like to grow and

attain its economic and social status; such country must be fully ready in strengthening and

empowering its academic institutions, both in science and technological capacity. Hence, the

students in their respective fields will need an array of reliable and interactive means of

accessing and retrieving information without wasting much time. Similarly, the use of this

Internet is greatly dependent on some associated factors such as purposes, students experience,

locations, Internet facilities and services available, among others on academic pursue of the

students in their institutions.

2
On the other hand, the internet is the key information and communication technology that

led to a worldwide revolutionary change in the information scenario according to Siraj, et al.,

(2015). The internet is a pool of knowledge and any country that fails to provide her youth

access to the internet is unseating the country from her throne of dignity among other dignitaries

as stressed by Olatokun (2008).

In fact, Akin-Adaeamola (2014) stressed that it is developed to serve as a platform for

various activities for all age groups in society. The internet is a technology that has become an

enormous part of people’s daily lives. Through its ability to act as a support medium in different

functions for which people use it, the internet was introduced to academic institutions as a tool to

enhance student’s academic experience in the mid-1990s according to Ngoumandjoka (2012).

Over the last decades, internet connectivity has improved tremendously and is available

everywhere such as homes, offices, travels and schools as cited by Ellore et al. (2014).

Today, empirical studies made by Akende and Bamise (2017) report that access to

information can influence the academic performance of students. The use of credible internet

resources is of greater importance for academic study, especially in high class courses which

require an academic review of literature as stressed by Sahin et al. (2010). Internet use for

educational purpose is found by Kim (2011) to be the heart of adolescent academic achievement.

The availability of internet is almost everywhere; most students have had access to internet on

their cellphones as stressed by Ellore et al. (2014). This helps students to broaden their

academic knowledge, research and assignments by accessing information worldwide and also

enhances easy communication to the academic community according to Siraj, et al. (2015).

Yesilyurt et al. (2014) argued that access to a home computer and internet connection

contributes to students’ academic performance as well as self-learning skills. Taking into account

3
access and usage of internet by secondary school students in Nigeria, Olatokun (2008) indicated

that most students believed the internet to be far better and convenient than their school libraries.

They saw it as a source for general knowledge, and hence it has helped them improve their

reading habits and their academic performance. The internet is sometimes used as a

supplementary learning material and has led to an improvement in students’ academic

performance (Siraj et al., 2015).

In Ghana, graduate students see the library as a favorable environment for studies, and a

source of relevant and realistic information for research. However, they prefer using the internet

to the library because of the fact that the latter provides readily information at all times, faster

access to information and large amount of information according to Kumah (2015). Access to

internet services is of great significance to a developing country like Ghana as stressed by

Ameyaw and Asante (2016). Updated and current information as cited by Kumah (2015) is well

organized on the internet for easy search, and has contributed significantly to students’ academic

laurels. The use of the internet creates awareness of the importance of the world around students

according to Ogedebe (2012).

Despite the significance of internet usage to students’ academic performance, its

negative impacts are various. Some students use the internet for non-academic purposes such as

gaming and social networking, thus culminating in loss of study schedules according to Singh et

al. (2013). Besides, students use the internet for leisure rather than educational purposes as

stressed by Ngoumandjoka (2012) and this can lead to fallen academic standards. The topmost

uses of the internet by secondary students is charting, downloading, watching videos online,

playing online games, and online shopping as cited by Akin-Adramola (2014). This suggests

that some secondary students do not receive proper guidance in the use of the internet in

4
studying. The internet can be a bad tool for higher academic achievement if only its usage is not

controlled as stressed by Mami and Hatami-Zad (2014).
