CELL
Definition: Cell is the structural and fundamental unit of life. It can
also be defined as the smallest and basic unit of life.
Cell is living because it can carry out the activities of living things.

FORMS WHICH CELLS EXIST

Cells exist in two major forms:
1. unicellular : Single cell. Eg. Amoeba, paramecium, euglena,
bacteria etc.
2. Multicellular: many cells. cell as part of living organism.
Discovery of cell
Cell was first discovered in 1665 by a scientist named Robert
Hook. He studied the bark of a tree using a local microscope and
he found something that look like a small room, he called it cell.
He is today regarded as the father of cell.
Other scientist that contributed to the discovery of other parts of
cell include;
i. Matthias Schleiden - 1838 - cells in plant
ii. Theodor Schwann - 1839 – cells in animals
iii. Rudolf Von Virchow - 1855 – cells comes from previously
existing cell. Etc.
Cell Theory
The cell theory state that all living things
are compost of small and fundamental
unit called cell.
Structure of Animal cell
Structure of plant cell
Cell component and functions
 Cell membrane: control substance which are allowed to enter or leave
the cell.
 Cytoplasm: it promote metabolic activities in the cell.
 Nucleus: it controls cell division which leads to reproduction.
 Mitochondrion: ( power house ), it is responsible for energy
generation in the cell.
 Vacuoles: it helps to remove excess water from the cell.
 Cell wall: it provide protection, shape and mechanical support for the
cell.
 Chloroplast: it contains chlorophyll and responsible for
photosynthesis in plant. Ribosome : it is responsible for protein
synthesis.
Evaluation
1. Identify five (5) other components from the
above structures which are not listed.
2. Using the structures above write four (4)
differences between plant and animal cell.
