WELLCOME TO BASIC TECH

CLASS
TOPIC : CHAIN AND BET DRIVES
Chain and Belt Drive
Chain and belt drives are used to transfer mechanical energy from one
point to another.

They are often used to convey power to the wheel of a vehicle,

particularly bicycles and motorcycles.
Fucntions of chain and belt drives
• To transmit energy from one shaft to another when both shafts are
separated by a distance greater than that required for gears.

• To change the speed of a pulley.

• To change the running direction of a pulley

• To carry materials as conveyors from one point to another.

Types of belt drives
• Open belt

• Crossed belt

• V-belt

• Chain belt
Open Belt
An open belt connects two pulleys and makes them run in the same
direction as shown in the figure below
Crossed belt
A crossed belt changes the direction of the pulleys as shown in the
figure below.
V-belts
• V-belts run on V-pulleys

• Both pulley and belts are V-shapped

• The V-belt and V-pulley are used in the fan belt of an automobile

• Several V-belts are used side by side to for heavy loads
