“Fraternity in the Indian Constitution as envisaged by

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar”

“OM SAHA NAVAVATU, SAHA NAU BHUNAKTU,

SAHA VEERYAM KARVAAVAHAI, TEJSVI NAA

VADEETHA MASTU MAA VID VISHAA VA HAI…

OM SHANTI HI SHANTI HI SHANTI HI”

Let us together be protected and lets us together be nourished by God’s blessings. Let us join all the
mental forces together for strength to benefit humanity. Let our efforts and learning be filled with
light and joy and be driven by the force of purpose. Let us never be poisoned with the seeds of
hatred for anyone. Let there be peace and serenity in all the three universes.

Fraternity “the last moment addition of Preamble”

Fraternity resembles the state of being brothers of the mother India or the feeling of brotherhood.
The word has been taken in Preamble by the French Revolution in the last minute of the finalization of
the constitution by the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He was a visionary and the addition of this word shows his
vision for the Independent India.

In today’s time the feeling of fraternity has been slowly losing its importance and it is the time to
remind the Nation the power which is concrete spirit of the Nation. Especially in the time of Global
Pandemic Disease is gasping roots in India. One has to stay apart but should have an essence of Fraternity
alive.

The words of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar “A just society is that society in which ascending sense of
reverence and descending sense of contempt is dissolved into the creation of a compassionate society”

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar at the latter stages of his life has adopted the Buddhism which shows his
feelings that what is good should be adopted. His vision of united India, the India of the dreams of
millions of its population is based on the single word Fraternity.

Fraternity assures the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation. There are
various provisions in the Constitution of India which ensures the fraternity such as provisions related to
fundamental duties and the concept of single citizenship has been beautifully envisaged. As the India is a
Federal Arrangement same as the America but in America there is two citizenship concept i.e one for
central and different for state unlike India this is which shows the Fraternity.

A Fraternity (from the Latin fraters: brother or brotherhood)

Fraternal organization is a society which comes together for religious and secular aims. There are two
components of Fraternity, first is the dignity of the individual and unity and integrity (added in 1976) of
the Nation.

Dignity of the Individual: We can see this in the other way like to protect the dignity of women is
our fundamental duty and to promote the harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood. The dignity
here means being equal in all terms like religion, caste etc. By the way of Fundamental Duties, DPSP,
political, financial and the social Rights and Justice there is an attempt to ensure the dignity of Individual
is protected.

Unity and Integrity (added in 1976) of the Nation: The nation’s Unity and Integrity is ensures by
Fraternity. Fraternity looks upon both of them as a watchman to ensure complete oneness. This ensures
that all the brotherhood which is against the National spirit is not accepted. As in various states especially
like Maharastra, Kerela, and Punjab there in state wise brotherhood and this should not be promoted at
any cost.

If there is no fraternity there is no dignity and no unity in diversity. At present India is facing many
challenges like separatism naxalites etc. let’s see the keen effect of Kashmeer’s separatism as we ask
them are you and Indian? They replied we are Kashmirians which is against the National spirit. We
can relate separatism to the seven sisters at some point. Naxalites like in Jharkhand etc. are only being
solved by the Fraternity.

Fraternity leaves no room for religion differences, communalism, rationalism etc. which hinders the
unity of the State. When the society start giving respect to each other and feels same in one or the
other way about each other in all terms then we can say Fraternity has alive.

The Last words (Conclusion):

Liberty cannot be divorced from equality and equality cannot be divorced from liberty. Nor can
liberty and equality be divorced from fraternity. Without equality, liberty would produce the supremacy
of the few over the many. Equality without liberty would kill individual initiative. Without fraternity,
liberty would produce the supremacy of the few over the many. Without fraternity, liberty and equality
could not become a natural course of things. It would require a constable to enforce them.

Times are fast changing. People including our own are being moved by new ideologies. They are getting
tired of Government by the people. They are prepared to have Governments for the people and are
indifferent whether it is Government of the people and by the people. If we wish to preserve the
Constitution in which we have sought to enshrine the principle of Government of the people, for the
people and by the people, let us resolve not to be tardy in the recognition of the evils that lie across our
path and which induce people to prefer Government for the people to Government by the people, nor to
be weak in our initiative to remove them. That is the only way to serve the country. I know of no better.

This is the view of the last speech of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to the constitutional assembly which directly
says that Fraternity is the way to achieve other aspects of the Constitution.

As at last these words of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar will end my Journey for explaining the envisage of
Fraternity is “Constitutional morality is not a natural sentiment. It has to be cultivated. We must
realise that our people have yet to learn it. Democracy in India is only a top-dressing on an Indian
soil which is essentially undemocratic.”
