KEY WORDS – TERM BASIC CONCEPTUALIZATION – EXAMPLES

4.1 COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE

4.1.1 We use comparative adjectives to describe people and things:

- This car is certainly better but it’s much more expensive.

- I’m feeling happier now.

- We need a bigger garden

We use than when we want to compare one thing with another:

- She is two years older than me. - He is a better player than Ronaldo.

- New York is much bigger than Boston. - France is a bigger country than Britain.

When we want to describe how something or someone changes we can use two comparatives with

and:

- The balloon got bigger and bigger.

- Everything is getting more and more expensive.

- Grandfather is looking older and older.

We often use the with comparative adjectives to show that one thing depends on another:

- When you drive faster it is more dangerous - When they climbed higher it got colder

- The faster you drive, the more dangerous it is. - The higher they climbed, the colder it
got.

4.1.2 Superlative adjectives:

We use the with a superlative:

- It was the happiest day of my life. - That’s the best film I have seen this year.

- Everest is the highest mountain in the world. - I have three sisters, Jan is the oldest and Angela is the
youngest

When comparing more than two things, you’ll likely use words and phrases like smallest, biggest, tallest,
most interesting, and least interesting. Notice the -est ending and the words most and least. Make sure
you use the proper ending or superlative adjective when forming these superlatives. The examples
below illustrate the correct form:

Martha is the elder of the four sisters.

In general, the plural of a noun is formed by adding -S to the

noun. However:
1. When the noun ends in S, SH, CH, X or Z*, we add -ES to the noun.

* With words that end in Z sometimes we add an extra Z to the plural form

2. When the noun ends in a VOWEL + Y, we add -S to the noun.

Singular Plural
boy Boys
holiday Holidays
key Keys
guy Guys

3. When the noun ends in a CONSONANT + Y, we remove Y and add -IES to the noun.

Singular Plural
party Parties
lady Ladies
story Stories
nanny Nannies
city Cities

4. If the noun ends in F or FE, we remove the F/FE and add -VES to the noun.

THE TRAFFIC REPORT

Good evening, this is the traffic report for 6:30 pm.

Leadstock road is very congested due to peak hour traffic, with many people going home. Drivers are
advised to exercise extreme caution as traffic is very slow in the direction of the city. The use of the ring
road at this point is not advisable due to an overturned lorry which is on fire at the junction with Lewis
Road. This has blocked all traffic going west to the Ring Road. Drivers are instead advised to go to the
Plain roundabout, then through Harpenden. The traffic in this direction is very light, as a result of the strike
at the hospital there, and finally the ring road can be joined at this point for drivers going east.

There are problems on Bridge road near Sliverton due to road works, and traffic is very slow leading to
tailbacks for several miles. The police advise all drivers going to Camberely to delay their journeys by 30
minutes if possible to allow the congestion to ease.

There has been an accident between a cyclist and a car on Morganfield bridge in Selby. The road is
consequently closed as the police investigate what happened.

Finally, The roads through Black Hill and the Cross roundabout are clear, and traffic is flowing nicely.
Please remember to drive carefully, and have a safe journey home.
That is the end of the traffic report.

4.1. Complete each passage with the correct comparative or superlative form.

a. Longwood Shopping Mall: built 1994 – 529,500 square feet – 150 stores – 30 minutes from downtown
area – 50,000 visitors per month

Ridgeview Shopping Mall: built 1996 – 530, 000 square feet – 250 stores - 15 minutes from downtown
area – 100,000 visitors per month

Dowlers Shopping Mall: built 2000 – 606,200 square feet – 350 stores – 45 minutes from downtown area
– 80,000 visitors per month

Dowlers is the newest (new) of the three and it is also the largest (large) one. Longwood,
on the other hand, is the oldest (old) of the three. Ridgeview is larger (large)
Longwood but Longwood is older (old) Ridgeview. Also, Longwood has more little (little)
number of stores of the three but Dowlers has many(many) stores of all. However, it isn’t the most
popular____(popular) of the three. Ridgeview is more popular (popular) the other two
with 100,000 visitors per month. That’s because it is closest (close) to the downtown area.
Longwood is the littlest (little) popular of the three with 50,000 visitors per month. Dowlers is
farer (far) Logwood from the downtown area. Dowlers is the most far (far) from the
downtown area; maybe that’s why it isn’t the farthest (popular).

b. Yesterday my brother and I went to see a football game. We watched our two favorite teams, the Eagles
and the Hawks. It was the second week of the season and the day was much colder than
(cold) the week before. We also were more excited (excited) because I love the Hawks and he
loves the Eagles. I thought the seats weren’t the best (good) ones, since I wanted something
closer (close) to the field. However, we sat and enjoyed the game. Well, we enjoyed it until we
started arguing. The problem with my brother and I is that we both think our team is the best
(good) the other team. He always says to me that the Eagles are faster (fast), stronger (strong)
and smarter (smart) than the Hawks. I never agree. On this day, he was wrong. The Hawks played a
lot more good than (good) the Eagles. They l o o k e d more powerful (powerful) and

tougher than (tough) the Eagles. One thing I didn’t like was that the food and drinks were much
more expensive (expensive) other places, and tasted m u c h more bad (bad). I was
surprised that a hotdog and a drink cost $8. Also, the hotdog was smaller (small) normal
hotdogs. So I felt sadder than(sad) in the previous game about my meal, and hoped to get something
tastier (tasty) after the game. But I was feeling happier (happy) person worldwide because the Hawks
beat the Eagles by 15 points. Driving home, I talked about how much
better (good) my team was than the Eagles. My brother was getting angrier than (angry)
when we were at the stadium and I noticed he was driving much (quick) than usual. We
were luckier (lucky) people because we didn’t crash. Finally, he saw a police car so he started to
drive slower (slow). We made it home safe and the Eagles were badder (bad) the hawks,
at least that day!

Advice

The Right Job for You

What are some important considerations when you look for a new job? According to experts, you
can to think about these things:
First, know yourself! You Firstly ask yourself exactly what you want from a job. Is it money,
interesting work, nice co-workers, or something else? Different people want different things from a job.
Assess yourself. Where3 are you now, and where do you want to be?
You also to want to think about your personal relationships. Consider which relationships are
going well, which ones are not, and, most importantly, why. This will help you understand how you relate
to people you work with.
Make changes! If you had problems in another job (maybe you were always late, or you did not finish
projects), then you will make changes before you take a new job.
It is too late when you are in the job. Decide what you don’t want! If you just want a nine-to-fi ve4
job, you had better not work for a company that expects you to be on call 24-7.5 If you have an interview,
prepare! You will find out about an employer’s business before your interview. Study the company’s
website. You should also call the company. Ask to speak with someone about the job. Of
course, many of these ideas are common sense,6 but a lot of people just don’t think about them. As a
