How does Filipino Culture
Influence Filipino Morality/
Ethics? (Explain then cite at
least 3 examples.)
Understanding Filipino
culture is complicated hence
that it was shaped by our
ancestors influenced by
Spanish colonization and
other colonizer, these races
that run in the veins of every
Filipino.
First Filipino culture that
influence the Filipino
morality/ethics is Filipinos are
family oriented, although they
may not have the wealth or
material things that other
countries have, in other ways
they are rich in love of family,
love of God and strong
relationship to other people.
Second, Filipinos are also
hospitable, it shows that we
Filipino love to have fun, we
love to sing, dance and eat
together. Every time that
there is a celebration or
fiesta, families preparing
foods to share it with others.
Third, Filipinos are religious,
we take it seriously when it
comes to religion. We respect
differences, respect other
religion. We innate this traits
way back the Spanish era,
who brought the Christianity
in our country. These traits
that I mentioned influences
the morality and ethics in a
way that Filipino culture is
now become the foundation

morality according to Fr.
Gorospe, SJ? Explain each.
The first norm of Filipino
morality Fr. Vitaliano
Gorospe, SJ mentioned,
"group-centeredness" or
"group-thinking." In a group
of teenagers there is always
a higher individual among
them, who control what is
right and wrong. For
instance, they plan to go for
cutting in class, the rest will
follow, and one kid knows
that it is wrong to skip the
class, but eventually he is
scared to confront his fellow
teenagers because he might
get tease or left alone. His
morality is now depending to
the group, and it is called
“conscience from the
outside”.
Another norm of morality in
the Philippines is
characterized by the "Don't
be caught" attitude, this
norm is habitual here in the
country. Especially in
schools, students during
exam always cheat and they
think that it is done by many.
Sometimes, they cheat
because of fear or shame for
the reason that some people
have high expectations to the
individual.

The Filipino character traits
and mentality that need to be
changed to help grow our
society to become socially
and economically progressive
and developed are, first,
awareness, according to Fr.
Vitaliano Gorospe, SJ, “The
solution to a problem
depends to a great extent on
one's awareness of the
problem and his attitude
towards it.”
It will help us to build a good
society if we are aware to our
surroundings, being aware
what the conflict is. “Another
wrong attitude is
complacency when one is
aware but is not concerned.”
We need to be more concern
on what’s happening in our
society and do actions to help
improve the wealth of
humanity. Another problem,
we are not soaring for greater
good instead when we feel
secure and contentment with
our status we sees no need
for change. In order to help
our government and society
to grow, we individuals need
to change our way of living to
contribute in the society. Also
we should be strong enough
to face any frightening
challenges. We shouldn’t
worry about pain and
 of our morality and we are
known to have good
characteristics but even we
are well-known for this, we
also have bad traits which is
not acceptable in the Filipino
morality.

figure and "what every else
does", this is similar to
"Don't be caught" attitude.
As long as you don’t get
caught by an authority it is
okay not to obey the rules.
Some doing this because
they see other people every
single day doing it and it
became usual to an everyday
living of Filipinos, that they
forgot what the right thing to
do is.
difficulties when we initiate
for change because
somebody out there will help
us to grow.
One common mistake of a
Filipino is escaping their real
problems, and make cover of
it by any sort of another
problem. It is why we can’t
grow faster. Last common
traits that Filipino habitually
practiced is being irrational,
People who know they are
doing wrong but do not want
to change simply find
excuses like "ako'y tao
lamang" , "ganyan lamang
ang buhay" ,"bahala
na" ,"eveybody is doing it."

We can’t solve a problem if

we don’t have proper attitude
towards it. There can be no
solution if we always say
“Ako ay tao lamang”, until we
realize that the problem is
seriously important, instead
we make a stand, think for a
possible solution and address
to help solve the problem.
This will help us to make
better future for our society.
