Lesson Plan

Date 20th November, 07 Class 1C Theme Linear Equations

Time 14:10 – 15:30 No. of students 30 Topic Constructing Linear Equation

Prior Knowledge/Skills
- Know the meanings of the words term, expression and equation;
- Know that algebraic operations follow the same conventions and order as arithmetic operations;
- Simplify or transform linear expressions by collecting like terms.

Objectives
After the lesson, students will be able to
- Represent problems and interpret solutions in algebraic form, making correct use of symbols;
- Present and interpret solutions in the context of the original problem;
- Appreciate the power and elegance of algebra in solving problems.

Development

1. Show students a calendar. Play the trick with them a couple of times. Students will say, "How did you do that?"
Answer "I used algebra."

2. Then demonstrate assigning variables to the different days and writing and solving the equation.

3. Let students practise solving the puzzle with each other.

4. Let students present their strategy to solve the puzzle and evaluate their results.

5. Worksheets for consolidation

6. Summerise the procedure of translating word problems into mathematical language.

Conclusion/Summary (Approx. 5 mins)
