A mambo in paenteve indicates the year st eaova A supenerpt pitn indices an ei change since the at evnon ot teapprova ‘This standard nas been approve for ase by agencies of he Deparment of Deen ff Nowe—The ie of ik standard was edtrally comestd in February 1999, 1, Seope 1.1 This practice covers the preparation of solutions con- taining inorganic salts in proportions and concentrations rep- resentative of ocean water [Note 1—Since the concentrations of ocean water varies with sampling location, the gross concentration employed herein isan average of many reliable individual analyses. Trace elements, occurring naturally in con: cenations below 0.005 mg/ are not inched. 1.2 This practice provides three stock solutions, each rela- tively concentrated but stable in storage. For preparation of substitute ocean water, aliquots of the first two stock solutions with added salt are combined in larger volume, An added refinement in adjustment of heavy metal concentration is provided by the addition of a small aliquot of the third stock solution to the previous solution, 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsiblity of the user of this standard to establish appro- priate safety and health practices and determine the applica bility of regulatory limitations prior to use. 2. Significance and Use 4.1 This substitute ocean water may be used for laboratory testing where a reproducible solution simulating sea water is required. Examples are for tests on oil contamination, deter- gency evaluation, and corrosion testing. Nore 2—The lack of organic matter, suspended matter and marin life i this solution does not permit unqualified acceptance of test results 4 representing perlormance in actual ocean water. Where corrosion i involved, the resus obtained from Iuboratory Tess may not approximate those secured under natural testing conditions that differ greatly from those of the laboratory, and especially where effects of veleeity salt stmoyphees, or organic constituents are involved. Iso the rapid depletion ‘of reacting elements present in lowe concentrations suggests caution in direct application of results 5. Reagents and Materials 5.1 Purity of Reagents—Reagent grade chemicals shall be used in all tests. Unless otherwise indicated, it is intended that all reagents shall conform to the specifications of the Commit. tee on Analytical Reagents of the American Chemical Society,® Other grades may be used, provided itis first ascertained that the reagent is of sulficiently high purity to permit its use without lessening the accuracy of the determination, 5.2 Purity of Water—Unless otherwise indicated, references {to water shall be understood to mean reagent water conforming. to Specification D 1193, Type I. 5.3 Sodium Hydroxide, Solution, Standard (0.10 N)— Pre- pare and standardize as directed in Practice E 200. 54 Stock Solution No. J—Dissolve the indicated amounts of the following salts in water and dilute to a total volume of * Reagent Chemicals, American Chemical Society Soecifcations.
