Chapter 6 Average and Instantaneous Rates
BLM 6-1
Goal Practise using a graph to describe the rate of reaction as a function of the
change of concentration of a reactant and a product.
Procedure Use the following table to answer the questions regarding the equation below:
A+BÆ2C+D
1. (a) On a set of concentration-time axes, plot a graph of [A] versus time. Use the
Questions
grid below, a separate sheet of graph paper, or a spreadsheet program.
(c) Draw a secant to the curve in the interval from t = 0.0 s to t = 3.0 s.
Determine the slope of the secant.
Slope= (2.42-3.20)/(3.00-0.00)
= -0.260
I attempted to draw a line which would touch the curve
between t t=0 to 3s but I was unable to rotate the line such that
it would touch at exactly one point)
(d) What is the average rate of decrease of [A] from t = 0.0 s to t = 3.0 s?
The average rate of decrease is 0.260 mol (L*s)
(e) What is the average rate of decrease of [A] between 3.0 s and 6.0 s?
←
← The average rate of decrease is 0.157 mol (L*s)
(f) How do you account for the difference in answers to questions (d) and (e)?
The rate between the 2 decreases and the reaction occurs due to the
decrease in reactant concentration.
(g) Draw a tangent to the curve at 6.0 s. Determine the slope of the tangent.
The tangent should have slope of M= -0.12
(I attempted to draw a line which would touch the curve at t=6s
but I was unable to rotate the line such that it would touch at
exactly one point)
Graph has a positive but slowly decreasing slope. Slope is positive due to
[C] concentration. Slope decreases because as concentration of A
decreases, C is produced at lower rate.
(c) Draw a secant to the curve in the interval from t = 0.0 s to t = 3.0 s.
Determine the slope of the secant.
Slope= (1.58-0.00)/(3.00-0.00)
= 0.527
(I attempted to draw a line which would touch the curve at
t=6s but I was unable to rotate the line such that it would
touch at exactly one point)
(d) What is the average rate of increase of [C] from t = 0.0 s to t = 3.0 s?
(e) What is the average rate of increase of [C] between 3.0 s and 6.0 s?
(f) How do you account for the difference in answers from questions (d)
and (e)?

3. (a) Based on the chemical equation for the reaction, write an expression that
equates the rate of reaction with respect to [A] to the rate of reaction with
respect to [C].
(b) Do the curves that you drew in questions 1 and 2 support the expression you
wrote for part (a)? Explain.
The curves shown in [A] and [C] supports that: the slope for A vs. time is
negative, and the slope for C vs. time is positive. For the entire graph, the
value for C is double that of A at any point in time.
