ABSTRACT
Since its evolution, hunting and agriculture have been part & parcel of human civilization. Dogs and
bulls have been the best companions to human for the development and advancement of civilization.
There can be no doubt that the invention of wheel changed the life of early human as well. It brought
drastic changes in farming and in turn it had changed the course of life. Farming or agriculture laid the
foundation of increase in crop production and human population. Now, human civilization transited
from “hunter-gatherers´ to producers.
The nutrition in the soil is one of the most important features to enhance agricultural productivity and
quality. The quantity of nutrients in the soil affects the quality of yield. The continuous use of land,
reduce the quality of soil like poor quantity of nutrients. Therefore, farmers fertilize the soil, use
pesticides, modern ways of irrigation and advance process of agricultural activities to make soil with
more productivity. Fertilization among these activities has been a priority of all times. However, use of
fertilizers is the need for additional land, the outcome of this development emerged as acquisition of
food which resulted decline in health, reduced nutritional quality of land and use of chemical to get the
maximum from the land at the cost of fertility and nutrients. Collectively, such tendency and mindset of
crop producers have been central for so many decades. They created the circumstances that transformed
the human biological landscape into what it is today.
With the advent of machines and new technology in the early 17th century, widespread use of machinery,
fertilizer and pesticide increased the production. These means came out as boon to farmers but bane to
general public. The excessive use of fertilizer caused the threat to human health and becomes the invitee
of dangerous diseases of kidneys, lungs and liver and even caused cancer. The toxic metals in
fertilizers kill the nutrients of the soil; damage the soil productivity and the local environment. Time has
come to reconsider the use of the chemicals at the cost of human health and soil fertility. Farmers should
restart using traditional manure, bio-fertilizers or chemical free fertilizers. This article is an attempt to
find out the awareness level of farmers about chemical free fertilizers. The researchers also tried to
understand the pros and cons of chemical free fertilizer from farmer’s perspective-its price, utility and
availability.
Keywords: Agriculture, farmers, soil-fertility, production, fertilizers, health, disease, chemical free
fertilizers etc.
