Summary
This study identified the common stereotypes portrayed by the four main characters in the story
entitled “Death of a Salesman” written by Arthur Miller. The behaviour portrayed by the characters are
being bound to relate on the nature of the Level of Equality introduced by Wallace, as cited in the book
of Longwe, which comprised the following; ACCESS, CONSCIENTISATION, CONTROL, PARTICIPATION,
AND WELFARE. This aims to analyse the millennial attitudinal response on gender stereotyping. The
Level of Equality has been compared as to what the post millennial learners are analysing at present.
The respondents were pictured - out on how they are to view the situations transpired in the story. In
the same manner, respondents were also observed on the way they handled circumstances in a family
and as how they are to perceive things in their own generation.

The responses were categorized as according to the acts of Willy Loman who represents the
Father, Linda Loman who acts as a Mother, Biff as the elder son and Happy being the youngest. The acts
presented depends upon on how individuals portrayed in the story where the researcher would be able
to relate on the behaviour possessed on the level of equality. The respondents were asked each
stereotype portrayed in the five levels of equality and recent researcher examined their responses on
the way the respondents answered their views towards family situations.

In determining their responses as to what level of equality the characters portrayed, it has been
represented in a table depending upon the observable acts witnessed in the story. The highest the
number of frequency that considered the highest result in each of the item. The responses therefore,
can be interpreted on the basis the researcher viewed the result.

In the light of the results of the study, the following were the outcomes:

1. It was found out that post millennial learners perceived their nature of bringing families
together, that all members must maintain an access to the family. Both parents must work to
cater the basic necessities in a family and for the purpose also of showing respect, love, and
giving freedom to every family member. In the same aspect, children are also expected to work
for their own as they reach in the level of maturity, knowing, that each must work for survival.
2. In the Conscientisation Level of Equality, it was also found out that post millennial learners,
never follow the traditional way of not befriending girls because they are just barriers for having
successful life in the future, but instead, considered girls as helpful to them despite their
predictions that girls are soft -hearted. In the same manner, learners also viewed husbands as
open –minded to the decisions wives could share in the family, affirming, that a wife knows best
for what is good for her family. The respondents also regarded that man’s capacity can be
measured according to his loyalty, honesty, integrity in dealing his family to promote love and
respect.
3. In the level of Equality under Control, respondents arrived into a decision that in a family, there
must be sharing of decisions, thoughts, and opinions. A husband must give high regards to his
wife, giving the freedom to talk, act, and make decisions. The respondents emphasized that a
Father should give freedom to his family to choose a career of their own and must build trust for
his family. According to the respondents giving the woman the freedom to insist into one’s
opinion, made a woman feels that they are respected by their husband, they are important and
from these, there will be harmonious relationship within.
4. In the level of Equality under Participation, respondents’ retort on this is that, to make the
family strong and attain good living, both the husbands and wives should share their plans and
decisions either on their family business or decisions for their family to prosper. Both parents
according to them must give decisions particularly on raising income for the family because as
noticed by post millennial learners’ wives nowadays are knowledgeable in making decisions
especially that most of them at present are now educated.
5. The last finding made by researcher is on the Level of Equality under Welfare, respondents view
towards this is that, both parents should be considered breadwinners and providers in order to
have balance and unity as a family. As what they uttered helping one another is an obligation of
each family member in order to attain a productive and comfortable life.
