The regular increase in free time is a direct consequence of the reduction in working time - the
working week in France has been 35 hours since 1998 - and the increase in life expectancy.
Today, free time represents on average 30% of the time we spend awake. Leisure has benefited
greatly from this increase and also of course from the increase in income.
Leisure is no longer reserved for the privileged few, who have the luxury of a palace or a first
class cruise on a liner. There are now leisure activities for all budgets. Like this, this is a right
that a majority of people can access.
Sriwanthi Thilakrathne Advanced level revision 15/07/2020
The right to leisure is considered by the youngest as a fundamental right. Having fun and
enjoying life are essential values for them. While the elders organized their life around their
obligations, the youngest today want to organize it around their passion. This rise in hedonism is
quite obviously linked to the decline of spiritual values. We are therefore preparing to enter the
era of the civilization of leisure, which will not be without consequences for lifestyles and value
systems to come.
In France, as in many countries, television occupies most of the leisure time. The party is
occupying an increasing place, especially among young people. It is synonymous with
conviviality, communion, sensoriality and intoxication, also sometimes of frustration in everyday
life. In the face of anxiety, leisure then becomes a way of escaping reality. But, of course, the
practice of leisure remains linked to the level of education, particularly for cultural activities.
Free time is also vacation, with paid leave, which appeared in France in 1936 and which is now
five weeks long.
More than eight in ten French people spend their holidays in France and the rest go mainly to
European countries. You should also know that while 80 to 85% of executives go on vacation,
only slightly more than half of the workers and an even much smaller part of the farmers leave.
The rate of departure on vacation therefore varies according to social class.
However, mass tourism has grown: in the 1990s, more than 350 million people around the world
traveled annually for vacation. But 95% of these tourists are from developed countries.
Tourism, like leisure in general, has become a real market. More and more companies offer an
ever wider range of stays or tourist circuits. The share of supermarkets in the sale of travel is
increasing and the services offered on the Internet attract an increasing number of French people

search hard you can find logic, sometimes you can't. For example plaindre means to feel sorry
for someone...
Truly Passive
