Boiling Point of Varsol Solvent: 157 ºC min - 207 ºC max
Flash Point of Varsol Solvent: 40 ºC. Typical value.

SECTION 4: HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Toxicity: Aluminum: No toxic effects.

Varsol Solvent: Essentially non toxic. Oral LD50 = > 5 gr/Kg – Dermal LD50= > 3 gm/Kg

Exposure to Aluminum paste:

Eye contact: solvents contained in the paste cause irritation in contact with eyes.

Skin contact: Prolonged skin contact with the solvents contained in the paste could possibly cause irritation and
dermatitis.
Ingestion: Paste must not be Ingested – Although the Aluminum flakes are non toxic and the solvent is
only moderately toxic if ingested and can cause fever, nausea, vomiting and convulsions, however aspired into
the lungs could cause pulmonary injury.

Inhalation: Concentrations of solvent vapor over 1000 ppm can irritate lungs and cause dizzy spells,
headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting and lung congestion. Negligible hazard at ambient temperature (- 18 ºC to
38 ºC)

SECTION 5: POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS

Acute inhalation : Important concentration can cause irritation

Chronical Inhalation : Does not have any effect on the lungs
Acute skin contact : Can cause mild irritation
Chronic skin contact : Repeated contact can cause irritation
Eye contact : Can cause abrasion
Ingestion : Negligible effects

SECTION 6 : FIRST AID MEASURES

Eye contact: Wash eyes with abundant water during at least 15 minutes, including eye lids. If the irritation
continues obtain medical advice.

Skin contact: Wash with water and mild soap and apply a hand cream. If the irritation continues obtain medical
advise. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Clean and dry contaminated clothing and shoes before using.

Inhalation: Remove person to a fresh air atmosphere and breathing passage open if unconscious or start
resuscitation. If available, administer oxygen and obtain medical help.

Ingestion: if swallowed do not induce vomiting. If person is unconscious, turn head to one side and obtain
medical help urgently.

SECTION 7: INFORMATION ON REACTIVITY AND RISKS

STABILITY: The powder will remain stable in lightly closed drum under normal conditions of temperature. Avoid
contact with the following materials: strong caustics, oxidizing agents, strong acids, halogenated hydrocarbons
and water.

Reactions:
• Caustics, oxidizing agents and acids depending on how strong can react violently with the aluminum flake
and develop a high temperature.
• Acid and caustic solutions can react with the aluminum flakes and form hydrogen gas and heat.
• Halogenated hydrocarbons react violently with the flakes.
• Water with aluminum will form hydrogen gas which is flammable and explosive.

Avoid heat and sources of ignition: Such as sparks and flames that could ignite the aluminum flakes suspended
in the air and this may form an explosive mixture.

SECTION 8: INMEDIATE METHODS FOR HANDLING FIRE EXPLOSION HAZARDS

Extinguishing materials
Use dry fine sand, other dry granular materials, class D extinguisher of low pressure and do not use halogenated
extinguishing agents such as carbon tetrachloride. Do not use water.
Procedures for fire fighting
During a fire of aluminum powder, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and full-body protective gear.
Gently sprinkle the extinguishing agent so that it covers the burning or smoldering powder.
Do not disturb the burning powder until it has a chance to cool at normal temperature.

SECTION 9: PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Ventilation: Local exhaust ventilation must be sufficient to keep concentrations below occupational exposure
standards. Ensure compliance with applicable exposure limits.

Handling: Avoid any spillage and forming of Aluminum dust. All electrical equipment should be explosion
resistant and grounded and use non-sparking metal tools. Avoid action that would generate airborne material.

Storage: Store in dry places and keep containers and drums sealed in accordance with all regulations and
standards. Temperature should be between 15ºC and 27ºC, well away from sources of heat such as radiators
and steam pipes. Keep separated from incompatibles substances.

SECTION 10: PERSONAL PROTECTION

Breathing protection: When dust level is above the allowable exposure limit, wear approved purifying chemical
cartridge suitable or particles.
Gloves: Use chemical resistant gloves

Eye Protection: Wear splash resistant safety goggles. Provide an emergency eye wash fountain and drench
shower near working area.

SECTION 11: LEAK, SPILL, DISPOSAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION

PROCEDURE IN CASE OF MATERIAL SPILL OR LEAK: Care should be taken to avoid aluminum dust.
Personnel should wear appropriate protective equipment. Remove all sources of ignition such as sparks and
flames. Use non sparking metal tolls and normal bristle brooms. Put the powder in a dry drum or container and
close tightly.

CONTAMINATED MATERIAL AND WASTE DISPOSAL: As defined in 40 CFR Part 372 Aluminum Powder is a
hazardous waste. It should be transported and disposed of by an authorized waste disposal company according
with applicable federal state and local laws.

EMPTY CONTAINERS: Empty containers that have powder residue should not be used, nor welded, nor cut.

EMPTY DRUMS: Drums should be recycled, crushed or dispersed of by authorized waste disposal company
according with applicable federal state and local laws.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS:

Aluminum (fume and dust) listed under Section 313 of SARA Title III
