7 Simple Skin Care Recipes for Your DIY Lifestyle

Your skin is your biggest organ. Whatever goes on your skin is absorbed and affects your organs, your
health, and your whole body.

Any toxins that go on your skin like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) found in many personal care products and
topical drugs, have to be detoxed by your liver. Other chemicals in your shampoo, in your lotions, in your
cosmetics also leave your body via your liver and kidneys. Those organs do an amazing job. But if they
have too much work to do cleaning out toxins, they can suffer.

You can help them out by switching out some of the commercial skin care products that you currently use
with easy to make alternatives. These 3 ingredient recipes are the basis for healthier personal care that
will help your liver do its job more efficiently.

You'll need beeswax, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and virgin olive oil. Yeah, I know I said 3 ingredients and
that's actually four. But there are 5 recipes and each one will use just 3 of those 4 ingredients. You may
want to add essential oils but they are optional in all the recipes except the very last one – a DIY perfume
that will make you feel amazing. That's it. Let's get started.

Lip Balm, like Burt's Bees
This is a basic lip balm recipe like Burt's Bees makes for $2.50 apiece. You'll need small tins or lip balm
tubes to store the lip balm. The containers can be cleaned and reused for subsequent recipes.

Yield: 5 lip balm tubes or 2 -- 1/2 ounce lip balm tins

Ingredients:
1 teaspoons beeswax
2 teaspoon cocoa butter
2 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
10 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)

Equipment:
1 cup glass measuring cup
Small saucepan
1 canning jar ring
Narrow Silicone spatula
Lip Balm tubes or 1/2 ounce containers

Directions:
Create a double boiler by placing the glass measuring cup into the saucepan, on top of the canning jar
ring. Add water to the saucepan so it comes halfway up the side of the measuring cup. Place beeswax,
cocoa butter, and olive oil inside the cup. Heat the saucepan over medium heat until the beeswax and
cocoa butter melt. Stir the ingredients to fully combine. Remove the cup from the saucepan and turn
off the heat source.

Stir the mixture as it cools to keep the ingredients blended. As the mixture turns more opaque, add the
peppermint essential oil, if you are using it. Pour immediately into lip balm tubes or tins. Allow the
containers to cool completely before capping. Label and date. This should last 6 months to a year if kept
in a cool, dry place.

Lotion Bars for Cracked Heels and Damage Cuticles

Lotion bars are a solid moisturizer that you can keep in your purse to moisturize your hands, soften
elbows or heels, and prevent cuticle damage on your fingers. Consider them your secret weapon
against dry winter skin and cracked heels.

The beeswax is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, soothing, moisturizing, protecting, and it even relieves
pain. How amazing is that! Soothing cocoa butter further protects your skin. This is a little heavy to use
on your face for everyday moisturizing, but it's ideal for wind chapped cheeks, chapped lips, and rough
red skin, soothing as it moisturizes and protects.

Makes 6 -- 2 ounce solid lotion bars

Ingredients:
1/4 cup beeswax
1 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup olive oil
40 drops essential oils (optional)

Equipment:
1 cup glass measuring cup
Small saucepan
1 canning jar ring
Narrow Silicone spatula
Silicone mold with 2 ounce cavities

As the mixture turns more opaque, add the
essential oils, if you are using them. I suggest 20 drops of peppermint essential oil, 10 drops of
frankincense, and 10 drops of rosemary essential oil, or another combination that you find
pleasing. Pour immediately into silicone molds Allow the lotion bars to cool completely and solidify
before removing from the mold. Wrap the lotion bars in parchment paper and insert into appropriately
sized tins for ease of use. Label and date. This should last 6 months to a year if kept in a cool, dry place.

Some containers you might consider

Used Altoid tins, mint tins, or other candy tins make fabulous containers for lotion bars. When you are
filling a rectangular mold that fits the container, only fill the mold half to three quarters full so that the
lotion bar isn’t too thick and the lid will still close.

Round 2 ounce salve tins make great lotion bar tins too, and are just the right size to carry in your purse.
Pick a 1 ounce silicone mold to make bars that fit the tin. Brambleberry.com is a fun place to shop for
molds for lotion bars, candles, and handmade soap. I get quite a few of my molds there.

Whipped Body Butter

This is a body butter to apply after a shower. It is rich in skin softening and moisturizing butter. Switch
out the olive oil in the last recipe for a dry oil like sunflower oil and your body butter will feel less greasy
and be more easily absorbed. But if you don't have any sunflower oil, go ahead and use olive oil. It will
just take a little longer for your skin to drink it in.

Yield: 1 pint when whipped

Ingredients:
1/2 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup olive oil (or sunflower oil)
40 drops of essential oil (optional)

Directions:

Create a double boiler by placing the glass measuring cup into the saucepan, on top of the canning jar
ring. Add water to the saucepan so it comes halfway up the side of the measuring cup. Place cocoa
butter, coconut oil, and olive oil inside the cup. Heat the saucepan over medium heat until the cocoa
butter melts. Stir the ingredients to fully combine. Remove the cup from the saucepan and turn off the
heat source.

Stir the mixture as it cools to keep the ingredients blended. As the mixture turns more opaque, add the
essential oils, if you are using them. Keep stirring by hand until the mixture begins to set up. Now the
fun part, using a hand mixer, whip the body butter until the mixture is fluffy and stiff peaks form. Spoon
into a glass jar. The butter will become stiff overnight. Label and date. This should last 6 months to a
year if kept in a cool, dry place.

To use:
Dab a small amount of the mixture onto dry skin and slather generously over your body. A little goes a
long way.

Every Day Hand Balm

We’ve made lip balm, lotion bars, and body butter so far. Now let’s create a hand balm to soothe the
dry cuticles, callouses, and scrapes that your fingers get as they work hard all day. From paper cuts, to
kitchen knife nicks this hand balm will soothe and repair your hands. It’s just as easy to make as the
other recipe.

Chocolate Massage Truffles
Massage can be therapeutic, soothing, and intimate. These chocolaty massage truffles are made with
just 3 ingredients. They are warming and reduce the friction of a massage, while increasing relaxation.
Skip the commercial massage oils that contain artificial fragrance. The toxic fragrance is absorbed into
your skin. These are soothing and nontoxic to restore and revive your skin, without the toxic overload
on your liver.

Yield: 24 (1 ½ teaspoons per massage)

Ingredients:
3 tablespoons cocoa butter

4 tablespoons beeswax

6 tablespoons sunflower or olive oil

5 drops frankincense essential oil (optional)

3 drops rosemary essential oil (optional)

Directions:

the heat source.

Stir the mixture as it cools to keep the ingredients blended. As the mixture turns more opaque, add the
essential oils, if you are using them. Immediately pour the mixture into silicone chocolate molds.

Allow the molds to solidify at room temperature. You may need to leave them overnight to get fully
solid. Once they are solid remove them from the molds and store them in a recycled chocolate box or
place them in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid.

Label and date. These keep in a cool, dry place for up to a year. If you are giving these as a gift, use
chocolate truffle cups to package them and give them the prominence they deserve. These are
amazing.

Peppermint-Rosemary Foot Care Lotion

In this recipe, while the essential oils are optional they do add antibacterial, antifungal, and pain
relieving benefits. The invigorating scent of peppermint and rosemary is uplifting and helps with
thinking and problem solving. If you’ve been on your feet all day, this foot care lotion will help you feel
yourself again.

Yield 6 -- 2 ounce jars or tins

¼ cup beeswax
½ cup cocoa butter or shea butter

DIY Solid Perfume
Artificial fragrances are one of the most toxic ingredients in personal care products on the market. They
are known to be carcinogenic. Many people have developed serious allergies to artificial fragrances.
Some of these allergies are life threatening. Many workplaces are now scent-free zones because of the
high toxicity of artificial fragrances.

But while you might not be able to get all artificial scent out of your environment

This recipe calls for essential oils but only two other ingredients. If you don’t like to use essential oils or
you don’t wear perfume, this recipe is good to have in your arsenal in case you need to make a quick
gift. This is a spicy perfume with overtures of forests and smoke. It has a higher percentage of essential
oil than most skin care recipes but you only use a little dab on the pulse points. No toxic fragrance oils
required, just pure, therapeutic, essential oils. If you’ve always wanted to create organic perfumes, this
is your recipe.

The sandalwood and ginger provide smoky, woodsy base notes. The lime gives a fruity top note, while
the frankincense provides the enduring middle note. Vetiver is a fixative to make the fragrance last and
offers its own smoky scent.

If you want to try your hand at crafting your own solid perfume, limit your essential oils to 100 drops or
less and mix a blend of floral, fruity, and woodsy essential oils to get just the right fragrance for your
own mystique and personality. A drop or two of vetiver will act as a fixative to prolong the fragrance.

Find a beautiful container for this exotic perfume – a beautiful crystal jar or a classy cut glass container
that holds at least 15 ml or 1 tablespoon.

are essential so don’t omit them. Keep stirring by hand until the mixture begins to set up.

Spoon the perfume into your fancy perfume containers. Label and date. This should a year if kept in a
cool dry place.

DIY Gifts
These make fabulous gifts, by the way, and they come together quickly, so keep that in mind for the
next time you need a last minute gift. These are welcome gifts for stocking stuffers, neighbor gifts, co-
worker gifts, and BFF gifts. You can mix up a batch and serve them up in gift baskets to spread the
cheer.

And don’t forget to give some to yourself. Too often as DIYers we mix up batches of awesomeness for
our family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers and forget that we need a little pampering too.
Remember to DIY for YOU, too. You’re worth the effort and the extravagance of your own fabulous
work.

Where are the Herbs?

You'll notice that I didn't use any herbs in these recipes. You can increase the potency of these recipes
by infusing the olive oil or sunflower oil with skin loving herbs like red clover, calendula, lemon balm, or
lavender, before making up the recipe. That will turn these mild mannered recipes into super power
awesomeness. Adding herbs by infusing the liquid oils in dried herbs is easy to do before you begin
making a recipe. You can follow the directions in this post to learn how to make herb infused oils.

What Can I Use Instead of Beeswax?
There are two vegan options for beeswax. They behave slightly differently in salves and lotions so you
might want to do some experimenting before doubling or tripling the batch.

Bayberry wax comes from the berries of the bay shrub found in Eastern North America. It has a slight,
balsamic fragrance and is usually sage green to dark green in color. It has many similar therapeutic
benefits to beeswax being naturally antimicrobial, moisturizing, and stabilizing. It will thicken the final
product but it is softer than beeswax and melts at a lower temperature. It is pricey compared to
beeswax but you'll only be using a small amount in these recipes.

Candelilla wax comes from the leaves of the wax slipper shrub and it's extracted using sulfuric acid. The
wax is hard and shiny. It sometimes has a strong aroma that transfers to the finished product. You'll
want to use only 1/2 the amount of candelilla wax as the recipe calls for beeswax. So if the beeswax
amount is 1 tablespoon use just 1 1/2 teaspoons of melted candelilla wax. (Use dedicated wax spoons
to measure. The wax is super hard and that makes it difficult to clean from utensils.)

You could also try just adding more cocoa butter. It is hard at room temperature but it melts at body
temperature. So depending on the ambient temperature where you live, that may or may not give you
the salve or lotion consistency you are looking for.

What Should You Use for Containers?

Save salve jars, lip balm tubes, candy tins, and any water tight container that is ½ ounce to 4 ounces.
They should be washed thoroughly and sanitized with hot water before use.
