QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS TO PROBLEMS NUMBER 11 & 29

11. A barrel has a mass of 12kg and a volume of 40L. Assuming the density of beer is 1,050 kg/m 3,
determine the total mass and weight of the barrel when it is filled with beer.

Given: mbarrel = 12kg g = 9.81m/s2 note: 1L = 0.001m3

mbeer = ? w total = ? .: 40L = 0.04m 3
Vbarrel = 40L mtotal = ?
Ρbeer = 1,050kg/m3
Solution:
mbeer = Vbarrel x Ρbeer w total = mtotal x g
= (0.04m3)( 1,050kg/m3) = (54kg)( 9.81m/s 2)
= 42kg = 529.74 N
mtotal = mbarrel + mbeer
= 12kg + 42kg
= 54kg

29. In a steady flow apparatus, 140 kJ of work is done by each kg of fluid. The specific volume of the
fluid, pressure, and speed at the inlet are 0.3 cu.m/kg, 610 kPa, and 18 m/s. The inlet is 35m above the
floor, and the discharge pipe is at floor level. The discharge conditions are 0.65 cu.m/kg, 101 kPa, and
280 m/s. the total heat loss between the inlet and discharge is 10 kJ/kg of fluid. In flowing through this
apparatus, does the specific internal energy increase or decrease? By how much?

Given: w = 140 kJ/kg V1 = 18 m/s g = 9.81m/s 2

Q = 10 kJ/kg V2 = 280 m/s
Z = 35m v 1 = 0.3 m3/kg
P1 = 610kPa v2 = 0.65 m3/kg
P2 = 101kPa Δu = ?
Solution:
wf1 = p1v1 PE 1 = g z/k
3
= (610kPa)( 0.3 m /kg) = (9.81m/s 2)( 35m)/k
= 183 kJ/kg = 0.343 kJ/kg
wf2 = p2v2 E in = Eout
= (101kPa)( 0.65 m3/kg) wf1 + KE1 + PE1 - Q = wf2 + KE2 + w + Δu
= 65.65 kJ/kg 183 kJ/kg + 0.162 kJ/kg + 0.343 kJ/kg – 10 kJ/kg
KE1 = V12/2k = 65.65 kJ/kg + 39.200 kJ/kg + 140 kJ/kg + Δu
2
= (18 m/s) /2k 173.505 kJ/kg – 244.85 kJ/kg = Δu
= 0.162 kJ/kg Δu = - 71.345 kJ/kg
KE2 = V22/2k .: Having the result in negative, it should be safe to declare
2
= (280 m/s) /2k that the specific internal energy will decrease.
= 39.200 kJ/kg
