MA English Dimensions of Literature

Do you think that using politically correct words and slang words can be an avenue for us
English teacher to help our learners to help our pupils/students to acquire the learnings in our
classroom? How are you gong to use it since we are in “New Normal Education”?

As a language and literature teacher, I believe that using politically correct words and
slang words can serve as an avenue for students to acquire learnings inside the classroom.
Utilizing politically correct words inside the classroom allows the students to be reflective in a
way that they become thinkers before speakers. Undeniably, words matter. They may help us
grow or bring us to our fall. With students possessing knowledge about politically correct words
would, hopefully, allow the learners to be vigilant of their words and “labels” that may hurt other
students or classmates. With such attitude, a good learning environment will be present fostering
growth in learning. But how should this happen in the “New Normal Education”? Nothing is
better than teachers being a model to students. If teachers are conscious and aware of what
he/she is saying, he/she sets a good example for students to follow.

Moreover, with the use of slang words, I hold the same principle – slang words can be an
avenue for teachers to help students acquire learnings in the classroom. As modern learners, our
students are accustomed to using slang words. With my experience, students are more motivated
to listen when their teacher speaks their tongue, by it I mean using their informal language or
slang. They become more active in participating because the words used are relatable to them.
More so, they feel as if the lesson is not too formal or boring because the teacher uses words that
are conversational. It is as if you are just engaging in a normal dialogue. How does one
incorporate the use of slang words in teaching in the “New Normal Education”? Well, as much
as the teacher may want to use slang words in modules and such, one cannot although one can
make use of it during online discussions or creating playful activities for the students.

In general, both politically correct words and slang words play a significant effect in
boosting the students’ motivation to learn, to become sensitive, and to be global learners.
