Microwave Safety
You must be tall enough to reach and operate the microwave oven comfortably
Never heat things that are not approved for use in a microwave
(read instructions)
Remove food from packaging if defrosting in microwave
Use containers that are labeled ‘microwave safe. Don’t use metal containers,
plates with metal trim, aluminum foil, or Chinese take-out containers with metal
handles. The metals can cause fires. Certain recycled paper products such as
paper towels and waxed paper contain small metal flakes that can start a fire.
Do not use plastic storage containers, foam trays or plastic wraps. These items
can melt and release harmful chemicals into the food
When covering food during cooking, leave a small portion uncovered so the
steam can escape.
Microwave ovens heat food unevenly. Follow cooking instructions, stir before
eating, and taste small portion so you don’t burn your mouth.
Always use oven mitts when removing food from oven.
Open packages carefully so the steam doesn’t escape quickly causing burns.
Don’t walk away from microwave while cooking popcorn as heat can build
up and cause fires. Follow directions and start with lowest amount of time.
Don’t heat water or other liquids beyond time recommended. Water can
become very hot and explode out of the cup causing burns.
If there is a fire in the microwave, turn it off using the ‘cancel’, ‘clear’, or
‘stop’ button. Never open the door! The fire will no longer get oxygen and will
burn out on its own. Call 911 so the Fire Department can confirm the fire is out.
