NUGEGODA.
(4) Last date of submission August 07, 2009
(5) No late submissions will be accepted.

Q1.
Select one physical quantity from among the list given in Table 1, corresponding to your
registration number.
Table 1

1st digit of the Reg. No. Physical quantity

1 Temperature
2 Speed
3 Light intensity
4 Velocity
5 Pressure
6 Fluid level
7 Position

(a) Find out how the selected quantity may be measured using a transducer.
(b) Now, visualize a situation within your experience, where you would like to control
the value of this variable.
(c) Sketch a complete block schematic diagram to show how you would use the
transducer (with other elements) in a feedback control system to achieve your
objective.
(d) Describe your control system used to control selected quantity.
(e) Using the principles involved in the construction of the transducer, obtain a transfer
function to represent it.
(f) Obtain a model for the complete control system including the plant, feedback and
controller.

State clearly the assumptions made in simplifying the model.

Keep your model simple and closed loop system being only of the second or third order,
at most fourth order.

Q2.
Second order control system is shown below.

(a)
(i) Obtain the characteristic equation and calculate the following when a unit step input
is applied to the system.

(I) Damping ratio (II) Natural frequency (III) Peak time

(IV) Rise time (V) Settling time

(ii) Use MATLAB to plot the step response of your system and verify the answers in a(i).

(b)
(i) How would your system respond when a unit ramp input is applied? Explain how the
above characteristics in part a(i) of your system change with this new input.

(ii) Plot your system with ramp response by using MATLAB and verify the above answer
in part b(i).

Note:
• For all MATLAB programs you have to attach both script (code) and the plot.

• Submit this TMA on or before the due date and prepare for the viva.
The viva dates will be notified in virtual class.
