Assignment 1: Reading Promotion

TITLE: Book Tasting – Graphic Novels

GRADE LEVEL: 4th grade

DOMAIN

V. EXPLORE

Discover and innovate in a growth mindset developed through experience and reflection

COMPETENCY:

THINK: Learners develop and satisfy personal curiosity by:

1. Reading widely and deeply in multiple formats and write and create for a variety of
purposes.

STRATEGIES:

A) Examine the artistic parts that make up a graphic novel

B) Conduct a book tasting on graphic novels

RATIONALE:

This strategy is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand
the purpose of graphic novels. Struggling readers need a place to start, graphic novels are
appropriate to all students and will give struggling students a sense of accomplishment
once they finish the novel. A book tasting activity, after some instruction, will allow
students to apply what they have learned about the composition of graphic novels and
will give them a chance to see what their peers are interested in as well.

LIBRARIAN’S ROLE in PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION:

• Instruct students on artistic parts of a graphic novel: panels and gutters, descriptions and
word balloons, sound effects and motion lines, and art (using scholastic’s guide).
• Select fiction and non-fiction graphic novels for examination.
• Provide several examples of comparison between artistic styles, show in powerpoint.
• Select graphic novel titles for the book tasting
• Create and provide “menus” for student to take notes about the books they preview
• Facilitate student discussions about the different books available in the library.
• Collect circulation data on graphic novels

TIMELINE

• Instruction phase – Two twenty minute classes, or one 40 minute class period
• Book Tasting – 45 minute class period
• Reflection/wrap-up/bringing it all together – 15 minutes
• 2 to 3 class periods total

ASSESSMENT OF STRATEGY:

Success of the Book Tasting – Graphic Novel strategy can be assessed by monitoring the
number of graphic novels 4th grade students borrow as well as the number of students
who participated in the book tasting. Check circulation statistics prior to the book tasting
and one month after the book tasting lessons.
