READINGS IN

PHILIPPINE HISTORY
OVERVIEW

• The course aims to expose students to various facets of Philippine History through the lens
of the eyewitnesses rather than rely on the secondary materials such as textbooks which is
the usual approach in teaching Philippine History. Different types of primary resources
will be utilized-written (qualitative and quantitative), oral, visual, audio-visual, digital-
covering all the aspects of Philippine life (political, economic, social, cultural). Students are
expected to analyze the selected readings contextually and in terms of content (stated and
implied). The end goal is for the students to appreciate and understand our rich past by
deriving insights from those who are actually present at the time of the event.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

• Analyze the context, content, and perspective of different kinds of primary sources.
• Determine the contribution of the various primary sources in understanding Philippine
History.
• Develop analytical and critical thinking skills with exposure to primary sources.

• Evaluate primary sources for their credibility, authenticity and provenance.
• Demonstrate the ability to use primary sources to argue in favor or against a particular
issue.
• Display the ability to work in groups and contribute to a group work or project in the new
avenue for teaching-learning.

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

• Propose recommendations or solutions to present-day problems based on understanding
root causes and their anticipation of future scenarios.
• Manifest interest in local history and concern in promoting national patrimony and
cultural heritage of our country.
