GU320B Controller Operation Manual
1. Description
GU320B Genset intelligent controller is adopted high performance computer chip,
can modify the control procedure and protection parameters of generator, which
incorporated kinds of functions, such as measure, control, protection, three remote,
and programmable management. It fully meets the auto control requirements of
different kinds of Genset for generator user and or special assembly factory.

The controller measure and display all output electric parameters for generator, and
rpm, oil pressure, coolant temperature, DC source voltage and running hours for engine,
and the voltage and current adopted true RMS measure to make sure data accuracy.

Optional Chinese and English menu, large LCD display.

Optional kinds of preset PT-sensor, and can custom parameters by corresponding software.

Buttons on control panel are used for selecting control modes, starting the running
procedure, displaying data, and modifying the parameters of running and protection.
LED indicators are used for indicating the operation mode of controller and the
running status of Genset, and LCD displays each measuring parameter and status.

Optional communication interface of RS485 or RS232, realizing long distance monitor,

or communication with PC, fully realizing functions of remote signaling, telemetering
and remote control, can read and set the running parameters of controller.

The controller is closely combined by panel and powder coated steel enclosure,
and the panel is die-casting by flame-retarded and high strength plastic. All
connections of controller are connected by pin-like and locked up terminal, easier
and more convenient to connect, move, maintain and replace the device.

This manual only suitable for GU320B generator intelligent controller, user must
carefully see manual first.

NOTE: the controller enclosure must be grounded; well low impedance grounded

During cranking or idle, if the remote start input signal is inactive, controller stop the
following start procedure immediately and control output by closing all relays, then
stop the start process, and return to original “READY” status after finishing the
counting of fail to stop.

NOTE: During crank, engine ignition, when the output frequency of alternator is
reaches to preset frequency, start motor disconnect power. Or the start motor is
disconnected power by one of the following reasons:

a. The magnetic pickup device which mounted on engine flywheel detects that
the frequency reach to preset frequency.
b. The output voltage of alternator is reaches to 80% rating voltage;
c. The low oil pressure switch of engine is open.

5.7 The start and stop processes of engine, which fuel solenoid valve is N. O.
type (difference from N.C. type):
Start control process:
When start running, the fuel relay of controller no action, fuel solenoid valve no
power, means the electromagnet of solenoid valve no action.
Stop control process:
When controller starts at stop control process, output the power of fuel solenoid
valve, fuel solenoid valve take action, engine begins stop. After delay (according to
the setting fail to stop delay) fuel relay breaking, disconnect the power of fuel
solenoid valve.
Other control process same as engine fuel solenoid valve is N. C. type.
5.8 Idle and Preheat function
Select the delay function of idle or preheat through “the delay setting value of idle
or preheat”, can select idle and preheat output base on the relay custom function.
When set value at 0, no delay function. When delay value not set at 0, realizing idle
and preheat function. Idle covers normal open (N.O) type and normal close (N.C)
type, when the both on working is opposition on close and open status. Now we
take N.C for example showing its working principle: when in READY status for idle,
idle relay switch off, controller running start procedure, idle relay takes action at the
same time, start delay time out, fuel relay takes action, when start successful
switch off start motor, in that time idle delay begins count down, when time out, idle
relay switched off. Safety-on delay begins counting, if each parameter in normal
after time out, unit running. Cooling stop delay begins counting and idle relay no
action, after cooling delay time out, idle delay begins count down, idle relay takes
action at the same time, after delay expired performs stop action, after stop switch
off idle relay. When stay at READY status with preheat function, preheat relay is
open, the produce of start delay begins counting, preheat relay takes action at the
same time, crank attempt successful, after safety-on delay unit running, preheat
relay begins counting, when time out preheat relay switched off, cooling delay for
stop, preheat relay no action.

10. Communication Function

(It is an optional function, user can according to detailed
condition to confirm equip or not)
10.1 Brief Introduction

The controller has a “RS CONNECTOR” communication interface , if the interface

equip with CI485A ( CI232A ) communication interface module, controller has
“RS485/RS232” industrial standard COM immediately. The communication
interface adopts photoelectricity seclusion design and has circuit protection
function to prevent interference from common module voltage and damage result
by error connection, the RS485 adopts 9600 baud rate. The controller that has
communication function has following features:
z 100% remote signaling, including running status and failure status.
z 100% remote regulating, including all settable parameters of controller.
z 100% telemetering data, including all measuring data of controller.
z 100% remote control function, covers all control functions on panel.

10.3 Communication Protocol
When working, controller adopts 9600 baud rate and MODBUS-RTU
communication protocol, when it is working, computer will send out a string of
instruction to controller and then waiting for the return data string. Modbus protocol
is one kinds of universal language that applied in electronics controller. Using this
protocol, controllers can communication with each other, the controller can
communication with other device through network (such as Ethernet). It has
become a universal industry standard. Using it, the control device that
manufactured by different manufacturer can connect to industry network,
processing concentration monitor.
This protocol defines a message construction that can be identified by controller,
no matter which network it used to communication. If response request from other
device it describes the process that a controller request to access other device and
how to detect error and make a record. It has set up message structure and the
common format of content.
When communicating in Modbus network, this protocol decides each controller
must know their device address, and identify message that send out from address,
and according it to decide take which action. If need respond, controller will create
return massage and send out by Modbus protocol. In other network, the message
that including Modbus protocol will be translated into frame or package structure
that used in network.

10.4 Communication Agreement

Use RTU mode, sending message at least using 3.5 characters interval to start,
which is easy to realize under network baud rate with multi character interval
(showed as following figure T1-T2-T3-T4). The first transferred field is device
address, the transmission character that can be used is hexadecimal 0…9, A…F.
The network device continued to detect network bus, including in the interval.
When received the first field (address field), each device decode it to judge whether
it is sent to itself. After the last character be transferred, an interval at least 3.5
characters decides finish the whole message. After this a new message can start.
The entire message frame must be transported as a continuous flow. Receiver will
refresh uncompleted message and assume the next byte is the address field of a
new message if over 1.5 characters interval before finishing frame. Likewise, if
another new message follows the last message sent out less than 3.5 characters
interval, receiver will identify it as the continuous of the last message. That will
cause an error, because the value in the final CRC field impossible correct. Typical
message frame as following:

GU320B Controller Operation Manual

Device Function
Start Bit Data CRC Parity Stop Bit
Address Code

T1-T2-T3-T4 8Bit 8Bit n*8Bit 16Bit T1-T2-T3-T4

Address code

The address field of message frame including two characters: ASCII or 8 bit RTU.
The possible slave address is 0…247(algorism). The address range of single
device is 1…247. Master select slave by putting the salve address into the address
filed of message. When slave send out response message, it will put itself address
into the response address field, in order to make master know which device send
out response.

Address 0 is used as broadcast address, so that can be identified by all slaves.

When Modbus protocol is used in higher level network, broadcast maybe not allow
or use other mode to replace.

Function Code

1. Read register command code (03H)read the maximum (word) for 40

2. Write register command code(10H)write the maximum (word) for 38

Data Field

Data field is structured by two hex number set, the range is 00...FF. According to
the network transport mode, it can be structured by 1 pair of ASCII or an RTU
characters.

The message data field sent out from master to slave including additional message:
slave must use this message to implement action that defined by function code.
This including discontinuous register address, the quantity of items will to be
handled, the practical data bytes in the field.
For example, if master requires slave read a set of hold register (function code 03),
the start register and the quantity of register to be read is specified by data field. If
master write a set of slave register (function code 10 hex), then data field specify
start register and the quantity of register to be wrote. Data bytes in data field need
to write into register data.

If no error, data field return from slave including request data. If occur error, this
field will including an exception code, master application can use it to judge the
next action.

In some message, data field can be inexistent (0 length). For example, master
requires slave response communication record (function code 0B, hex), slave do
not require any additional message.

29
GU320B Controller Operation Manual
Error Correction Code(CRC)

Standard Modbus network has two error detection methods. Content in error detect
field depends on the selected detect method.
When selects RTU mode as character frame, error detect field including a 16 bits
value (realized by two 8 bits character). Content in error detect field is detects by
message content processing CRC. CRC field append at the end of the message,
add from low byte to high byte. So the high byte of CRC is the last byte of the send
out message.
Use RTU mode, message including an error detect field that based on CRC
method. CRC field detects the entire message content.

CRC field covers two bytes, including a 16 bits binary value, which added into
message after calculated by transmission device. Receiver recalculates the
received message CRC and compared with the value in CRC field. If any
difference, there must be some error.
CRC firstly introduces a 16 bit register that all value at “1”, and then processes the
value in the current register for the continuous 8-bits in message. Only 8 bit data in
each character is active for CRC, start bit, stop bit and parity are inactive.
During CRC produce, each 8 bit character will OR with register content respectively,
result moving to LSB (least significant bit), use 0 fill out MSB (most significant bit).
LSB is picked out for detection, if LSB is 1, register OR with the preset value, if
LSB is 0, no action. The whole process will repeat 8 times. After finishing the last
bit (the eighth bit), the next 8-bits will OR with the current value of register
respectively. At last, the value in register is CRC value that after all bytes in
message are processing.
