ASSIGNMENT NO. 7: AIR QUALITY ENGINEERING

Name:
David, Patricia Laine L.

Prepare clean and clear solutions to the following problems.

1. Given the following temperature readings:

Elevation (m) 0 50 100 150 200 250 300

Temperature (C) 20 15 10 15 20 15 20

What type of plume would you expect if the exit temperature of the plume is 10 C and the smoke stack is (a) 50 m tall?
(b) 150 m tall? (c) 250 m tall?

a) At 50 m and 10 C, there is a Looping plume.

b) At 150 m and 10 C, there is a Fumigation plume.
c) At 250 m and 10 C, there is a Fumigation plume.

2. A power plant emits 300 kg/h of SO2 into a neutral atmosphere with a wind speed of 2 m/s. The atmospheric dispersions
are assumed to be 100 m (along the y-axis) and 30 m (along the vertical direction). What will be the ground level
concentration of SO2, expressed in micrograms per cubic meter, if the town is 2 km off the plume centerline and the
plant has a stack that produces an effective stack height of 20 m? What will be the ground level concentration if the
power plant installs a 150-m stack?

3. For the following emissions, determine the most appropriate air pollution control device.
a. Emission 1: Particle size 70 to 200 m
Gaseous emission None
Temperature 366 K
Space limitations None
b. Emission 2: Particle size 0.1 to 200 m
Gaseous emission No
Temperature 366 K
Space limitations None
c. Emission 3: Particle size 5 to 40 m
Gaseous emission SO2
Temperature 922 K
Space limitations None
Contaminated water not acceptable

4. A 400-m, one-way, two-lane rectangular tunnel (9 x 4 m) filled with cars is blocked by an accident at the exit. The
ventilation system involves large exhaust fans blowing ambient air out of the exit end of the tunnel. Assume that the
tunnel is full of cars, all with engines idling. One car occupies 6 linear meters in one lane and emits 2.0 g/min CO. The
fans pull 0.42 x 106 m3/min of fresh air containing 0.5 mg/m3 Co into the tunnel entrance. What is the concentration of
CO in the exit air? Assume complete mixing.
