Dracula

I talk abaout one of the most famous literary works of the nineteenth century .The name of this
literary work is Dracula.
Dracula was written by Bram Stoker in 1897, in fact it was considered one of the best literary works
by that author.
In adition, some literary critics said that many of the works that were written by Bram Stoker before
and after Dracula were regarded by his admirers as of little interest, despite the fact that Bram Stoker
was one of the best occult writers of the time.
As a result, I'd like to first talk about who Bram Stoker was?
He was born in Ireland in 1847, Bram Stoker studied mathematics at Dublin's Trinity College. Then,
He began working as a civil servant at Dublin Castle, home to British royals in Ireland from the early
1800s to the early 1920s.
During this period, Stoker began juggling another role: In the evenings, he worked as an unpaid
writer for a local newspaper, the Dublin Evening Mail (later the Evening Mail), penning reviews of
various theatrical productions. Stoker also found time for his short stories, publishing "The Crystal
Cup" in 1872.
After nearly 10 years in civil service, Stoker left his position at Dublin Castle. Around that same time,
Stoker established a friendship and working relationship with Sir Henry Irving, that would soon prove
to be a pivotal step for his career, inspiring his literary prowess and, ultimately, his most acclaimed
work.
Consecuently, He began carving out a second career as a writer, publishing his first novel, The
Primrose Path, in 1875. He continued to publish writings while managing the successful Lyceum
Theatre, including the short story collection Under the Sunset (1882) and his second novel, The
Snake's Pass (1890), earning modest acclaim.
Moreover, in 1897, Stoker published his masterpiece, Dracula. While the book garnered critical
success after its release, it didn't achieve peak popularity until well after its author's death. After
Dracula, Stoker continued to churn out an array of fiction and nonfiction works. He wrote a total of 12
novels in his lifetime, his later efforts including Miss Betty (1898), The Mystery of the Sea (1902), The
Jewel of Seven Stars (1904) and The Lair of the White Worm (1911), which was later published
under the title The Garden of Evil.
Stoker died in London, England, on April 20, 1912, with various reports citing the cause as
complications from a stroke, exhaustion or syphilis.
Stoker's legacy has endured through his most famous work, Dracula, which has inspired the creation
of numerous theatrical, literary and filme adaptations.
Secondly, i talk about the Dracula main characters, i Will try to describe the most significant features
of these characters.
Count Dracula
He is a centuries-old vampire and Transylvanian nobleman. He lives in a crumbling castle in the
Carpathian Mountains. Beneath a veneer of aristocratic charm, the count possesses a dark and evil
soul. He can assume the form of an animal, control the weather, and he is stronger than twenty
men. , However, his powers are limited— for instance, he cannot enter a victim’s home unless
invited, cannot cross water unless carried, and is rendered powerless by daylight.
Jonathan Harker
He is a lawyer, whose firm sends him to Transylvania to conclude a real estate transaction with
Dracula. Young and naïve, Harker quickly finds himself a prisoner in the castle and barely escapes
with life. He demonstrates a fierce curiosity to discover the true nature of his captor and a strong will
to escape. Later, after becoming convinced that the count has moved to London, Harker emerges as
a brave and fearless fighter because he wanted to save his fiancée.
Mina Murray
Jonathan Harker’s fiancée. Mina is a practical young woman who works as a schoolmistress.
Eventually victimized by Dracula herself, Mina is also the best friend of the count’s first victim in the
novel, Lucy Westenra. Mina is in many ways the heroine of the novel, embodying purity, innocence,
and Christian faith—virtues she maintains despite her suffering at the vampire’s hands. She is
intelligent and resourceful, and her research leads Van Helsing’s men to Castle Dracula
Van Helsing
A Dutch professor, described by his former pupil Dr. Seward as “a philosopher and metaphysician,
and one of the most advanced scientists of his day.” Called upon to cure the ailing Lucy Westenra,
Van Helsing’s contributions are essential in the fight against Dracula. Unlike his comrades, Van
Helsing is not blinded by the limitations of Western medicine: he knows that he faces a force that
cannot be treated with traditional science and reason. Knowledgeable about vampire folklore, Van
Helsing becomes Dracula’s chief antagonist and the leader of the group that hunts Dracula down and
destroys him.
Lucy Westenra
Mina’s best friend and an attractive, vivacious young woman. The first character in the novel to fall
under Dracula’s spell, Lucy becomes a vampire and banishes her soul from the promise of eternal
rest. As a result, Van Helsing and the otrher gentlemen hunt down the demon she has become and
kills it, following the rituals of vampire slaying, and thus restoring Lucy’s soul to her body and to
heaven.
John Seward
A talented young doctor, formerly Van Helsing’s pupil. Seward is the administrator of an insane
asylum not far from Dracula’s English home. Throughout the novel, Seward conducts ambitious
interviews with one of his patients, Renfield, in order to understand better the nature of life-
consuming psychosis. Although Lucy turns down Seward’s marriage proposal, his love for her
remains, and he dedicates himself to her care when she suddenly takes ill. After her death, he
remains dedicated to fighting the cou
Arthur Holmwood
Lucy’s fiancé and a friend of her other suitors. Arthur is the son of Lord Godalming and inherits that
title upon his father’s death. In the course of his fight against Dracula’s dark powers, Arthur does
whatever circumstances demand: he is the first to offer Lucy a blood transfusion, and he agrees to kill
her demonic form.
Quincey Morris
He is an American from Texas, and another of Lucy’s suitors. Quincey proves himself a brave and
good-hearted man. Quincey ultimately sacrifices his life in order to rid the world of Dracula’s
influence.
Renfield
He is a patient at Seward’s mental asylum. Variously a strong behemoth and a refined gentleman,
Renfield indulges a habit of consuming living creatures—flies, spiders, birds, and so on—which he
believes provide him with strength, vitality, and life force. he is the first lawyer that work for Dracula.
Fianlly , I talk abaut the history of the Dracula's book
Dracula comprises journal entries, letters, and telegrams written by the main characters.
It begins with Jonathan Harker, a young English lawyer, as he travels to Transylvania. Harker plans
to meet with Count Dracula, a client of his firm, in order to finalize a property transaction. When he
arrives in Transylvania, the locals react with terror after he discloses his destination: Castle Dracula.
Though this unsettles him slightly, he continues onward. The ominous howling of wolves rings
through the air as he arrives at the castle. When Harker meets Dracula, he acknowledges that the
man is pale, gaunt, and strange. Harker becomes further concerned when, after Harker cuts himself
while shaving, Dracula lunges at his throat. Soon after, Harker is seduced by three female vampires,
from whom he barely escapes. He then learns Dracula’s secret—that he is a vampire and survives by
drinking human blood. Harker correctly assumes that he is to be the count’s next victim. He attacks
the count, but his efforts are unsuccessful. Dracula leaves Harker trapped in the castle and then,
along with 50 boxes of dirt, departs for England.
Meanwhile, in England, Harker’s fiancée Mina is visiting a friend named Lucy Westenra, who has
recently gotten engaged after declining a number of suitors. One night Mina must search for Lucy, as
she has fallen back into her old habit of sleepwalking. When Mina finds her outside near a graveyard,
there appears to be a shape hovering over her for a split second. Mina notices two small red marks
on Lucy’s neck and assumes that she must have inadvertently pricked Lucy with a pin. Over the
following days, Lucy falls ill and is at times seen through a window next to a bat. Mina is worried, but
she is called away once she receives correspondence from Jonathan. Lucy goes into the care of Dr.
Seward and Dr. Van Helsing, who, after a number of failed blood transfusions, decide further action is
needed. They then drape Lucy and her room with garlic—a strategy used to ward off vampires. Lucy,
however, soon dies.
After her death, many report the appearance of a creature who is attacking children in the area.
When Jonathan (who was able to escape Count Dracula’s castle) and Mina return to England, now
as a married couple, Jonathan’s accounts of Dracula lead Van Helsing to believe that Lucy
contracted vampirism from the count and is the one tormenting the children. In order to prevent her
from further killing, they unearth her corpse, stake her through the heart, cut off her head, and stuff
her mouth with garlic.
Now that Lucy has been taken care of, the group decides to track down Count Dracula and the 50
boxes of dirt he brought with him. According to lore, Dracula needs the dirt of his home country to
remain healthy. The group attempts to destroy the boxes so that Dracula has no means of
regeneration. One night, amid feelings of uneasiness toward Mina’s recent behaviour, Van Helsing
and Seward break into her room to find Jonathan unconscious and Mina drinking blood from a gash
in Dracula’s chest. The vampire disappears and returns to Transylvania only to be followed by the
determined group. They find him buried in the final box of dirt and promptly cut off his head and stab
him through his heart. Dracula crumbles into dust. The vampire hunters also lose one of their own,
Quincey Morris, during the expedition.
In my opinion Bram Stoker Dracula's book was one of the best books I have read so far. Because it
reflects a lot of the influence that one person can have on another, in addition to this influence, it
causes people to carry out positive actions on the one hand for their development as human beings,
on the other hand, it can lead people to commit crimes.
Besides, this book allowed me to enjoy my reading moments, because it describes each of the
scenes in detail and allowed me to feel and experience each one of the events narrated by the main
characters.
