WTP Pump House - Flooding Analysis: Prelude
WTP Pump House - Flooding Analysis: Prelude
Totally there are three pump houses in WTP. Recently there was an improbable event which led to
the failure of motors in Old Raw Water pump house due to flooding. Along with operation, analysis
of the event was done and possible outcomes are discussed in this report
On 23/06/2020, P1F pump was stopped and in order to depressurize the header valve was opened in
the Old Raw Water pump house. At the same time, in order to take vibration the same pump was
started. This led to flooding of the house.
Observation:
Presently the following pumps are present in old raw water pump house
o P1 C/D/E
o P2 A/D
o P12 A/C
As per drawing, the flooring slope towards the sump is ~1:250.
A sump, capacity of 500 lit, is available along with a submersible pump at the south west
corner of the house.
Water collected in this sump is routed to FR(O)
In new raw water pump house a sump is available south east direction and no trench is
available.
In Fire hydrant pump house a sump is available at the south side (middle)
Presently in FH pump house there are hole provisions (3 nos) for draining the water into the
sump.
Recommendations:
Flooding is not so common in this area. It is an infrequent occurrence. Care shall be taken
during depressurizing operation.
Sump capacity shall be increased by increasing the depth or length so that it can hold more
water
Process Engineering Group
A trench shall be provided at the west side and slope shall be given towards trench (west).
The slope of the trench shall be towards the sump (south), so that the water can directly
flow in to the trench and to the sump. This will avoid flooding the area.
Sump inlet opening shall be widened to ensure that water flow into the sump in all
