The structure of the society currently is such that men are portrayed as breadwinners while
women are expected to manage the household and raise children. This is a classic case of
binary opposition where men are stereotyped to be superior in terms of their career
progress and must earn enough to support the family. The title of the movie, “Ki and Ka”
is based upon the role of “Ki” as in female and “Ka” as the male in the family. In the
movie, Arjun Kapoor decides to be a house husband while supporting the ambitious
Kareena Kapoor in her dream of making a career as a marketing manager, much to the
disdain of the society(who give him taunts like “Arre! Biwi ka khaega kya?!” (will you eat
from your wife’s earnings?!)). This decision of his can be considered as the deconstruction
character in the film, he is asked the question of whether they can consider him “to be the
woman in the relationship”, thus exposing the patriarchal mindset of the society. Arjun
Kapoor does not give in to the pressure by society, which later results in his unique story
going viral across the nation. He is accepted by society, thus giving an example of
patriarchal norms of the society and reconstructs it as an unbiased one, thus giving us an
essence of post-structuralism.
