1. Water is flowing out of a sluice gate as shown in Figure 1. The following are specified: upstream depth
y1=1.5 m; sluice gate opening: y0 = 0.3 m; coefficient of discharge of sluice gate, cd = 0.548; coefficient
of contraction for sluice gate = 0.3; and width of channel, B = 3.0 m. Find the force exerted by the water
on the sluice gate. (Hint: Unit discharge through the sluice gate is given by: 𝑞 = 𝑐𝑑 𝑦𝑜 √2𝑔𝑦1)

2. A hydraulic jump is formed in a 5-m wide outlet at a short distance downstream of a control gate. If the
flow depths just downstream of the gate is 2 m and the outlet discharge is 150 m3/s, determine
i. Flow depth downstream of the jump;
ii. Thrust on the gate; and
iii. Head losses in the jump.
Assume there are no losses in the flow through the gate.
(Ans. i. 8.63 m; ii. 2434.5 kN, iii. 4.21 m )

3. A rectangular channel has a width of 2.0 m carries a discharge of 4.8 m3/s with a depth of 1.60 m. At a
certain section a small, smooth hump with a flat top and of height 0.10 m is proposed to be built.
Calculate the likely change in water surface. Neglect energy losses.
(Ans. 0.02 m)

4. The width of a horizontal rectangular channel is reduced from 3.5 m to 2.5 m and the floor is raised by
0.25 m in elevation at a given section. At the upstream section, the depth of flow is 2.0 m and the kinetic
energy correction factor is 1.15. If the drop in the water surface elevation at the contraction is 0.20 m,
calculate the discharge if (a) the energy loss is neglected, and (b) the energy loss is one-tenth of the
upstream velocity head. The kinetic energy correction factor at the contracted section may be assumed to
be unity.
(Ans. i. 9.54 m3/s; ii. 9.29 m3/s)
